Rather-b-fishin Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Got a tournament this weekend...any ideas on where to start first thing in the morning out of San Augustine? Any good points to start off on? Thanks! Quote
bigtimfish Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I gotcha covered. if your around the powell park area which i believe you are. I would start off at either needmore point, or go around to farmers cove. on a map you will see a spot called farmers flats its the cove just to the left of the flats. there is a house on the point in the middle of the cove. start on the far left side of that cove and iff you have time fish all the way out. its a big cove though. as the day warms move to buck bay. fish the stick ups with jigs and c rigged lizards. there is a single stickup in there that has a drop to i think 30+ ft. its kinda in the middle. also target drop offs and creek channels. GOOD LUCK. Quote
Rather-b-fishin Posted May 7, 2009 Author Posted May 7, 2009 Thanks so much! I was thinking about starting off on Needmore but I wasn't sure if I should make the run to it first thing. You confirmed my thoughts..Thanks! Also, San Augustine is just north of Buck Bay so if we end up there that's great as well. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted May 7, 2009 Super User Posted May 7, 2009 I believe Rayburn is at pool now, probablely over pool at this time, which means the buck brush has been flooded. Changes the game, the grass that was near the surface a month ago is now under water by a few feet. I'd say stay in Buck, Buck didn't dirty up a few weeks back when she came up a couple feet in a few days. I do know the water above Buck got real dirty coming from the upper bayou and some big fish came from Buck's cleaner water to win money. Great choices, Needmore point, Farmers, always local hot spots, great grass. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted May 8, 2009 Super User Posted May 8, 2009 Look directly across the from the boat ramp. there will be a set of five points going north(Up lake). . The first point is a big flat. Fish the second point(It has a deep creek that runs right up against it and turns north) The fourth and fifth points ar also good. Due west from the fifth point across ayish batou is a great point that has the bayou running up against it. Get on the T/M and go straight back toward the ramp 40 yards S.E. off the point and you will hit the drop. It should have about 15 ft. of water on the end and drop into 25-28 ft. Work your way back into the pocket and fish the first point(It will be the secondary point) It has a hard(Clay) bottom. fish it with a crankbait and a jig. The grass will be off the point at about 12 ft. If you want to go south come out of San Augustine Park and follow the eastern shore about 1 1/2 mile south and this will put you on the northern entrance to Buck Bay. Fish the willows and buck bursh with a worm and a jig. I reccommend a watermellon/red on the plastics and a 3/8 jig in brown with a pumpkin/green trailer. If you move out deeper go to a 1/2 jig in the same color or a Texas Smoke or Camo color. The points on the south side of Buck Bay are good also as well as the two pockets just south of buck Bay. The main creek running into Buck Bay splits about 100 yards off the south point and runs over into the two smaller pockets just south of Buck Bay. These two pockets and this creek do not get the pressure that Buck Bay receives and I have caught a ton of fish in this area on crankbaits, jigs, and worms. All of this is within two miles of the ramp. Good luck and good fishing. Jack Quote
Rather-b-fishin Posted May 8, 2009 Author Posted May 8, 2009 Excellent info guys thanks so much! I'll let y'all know how I do. Quote
Rather-b-fishin Posted May 12, 2009 Author Posted May 12, 2009 Well, didn't do too well. It appeared that the lake was blooming and generally when that happens the bite slows way down. I managed 3 keepers and caught probably 20 fish all day. For some reason the fish weren't feeding early on the points like I had thought they would. Most fish in our club was caught in shallow water along buck brush or in the grass. It was a weird fishing day. Our 3 keepers came in the very back of a couple cuts. Quote

The high(New) water has them scattered out. You just have to cover water and keep trying different things. Catt and I went through the same thing on Toledo last Wed. and Thur. Quote
Rather-b-fishin Posted May 13, 2009 Author Posted May 13, 2009 Figured the fish out at 2 pm. If I had another hour we probably would have had a decent limit. My Dad & I love to power fish so it took me all day to finally sloooww doooown. Quote
