Live.2.Fish Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Last Sunday, I was back in my hometown in northeast Nebraska to visit the family. My brother had just bought a new (used) jon boat, and he wanted some help with putting in a floor with carpet and mounting the seats. On Saturday afternoon we were fixing up the boat. When we finished, we just "had" to try it out. My brother got permission to fish a local sandpit and were were planning on going out at 5am the next day (Sunday). We were a little late getting out to the lake, the captian of this new boat was a little sleepy at 5am, oh well, he will learn. He was just lucky it was his boat, or I would have left him at home ;D This was the maiden voyage of this boat for both of us. We have never fished this lake before in a boat, but my brother Braxton had fished it from once the shore once two years ago. The day was unreal! Now you have to keep in mind that we are less than 60 miles south of South Dakota, so we are pretty far north, thus a huge bass is not the same as you California folk. Together we both caught 20 bass in 3 hours. 10 of them were over 4lbs. Our 5 Bass Limit for the day was 24lbs 6oz. That is an awesome day in Nebraska!!! By far the best day either one of us had fishing in this state. The top 2 fish caugh were a 5lb 7oz (my brother) and 5lb 2oz (me) All our bass were caught on ***. Braxton's Bass was caught on a Big Boy Brush Bug, Watermelonseed Chartail, T-rigged 5lb 7oz Here is my bass. Caugh on Baby Brush Bug, Blue Swril, T-rigged Tipped the scales at 5lb 2oz, But I think that it looks bigger than my Brothers! 8-) This was the second bass of the day and my first. When I set the hook, the word that came out of my mouth was " Pig...PIG!!!" My brother and I were laughing all day about that little phrase. I was so stoaked, bass like these just don't get caught in Nebraska that often. (Its about half our state record 10lb 11oz, to give you some perspective) Excuse the bad photo, the was taken directly into the sun. All in all, an unbelievable day on the water!!! 8-) Quote
ring fry Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 That's an awesome day of corn fed hogs. I lived in SE Nebraska for a while and there's a bunch of good fishing up there in Huskerland. Great job! Quote
RWHusker. Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Great trip and great fish. Thats a great day anywhere let alone a more northern state. Wheres your hometown? Quote
Super User firefightn15 Posted July 1, 2008 Super User Posted July 1, 2008 I think those fish are the ones I've been looking for here in Wi. Nice fish guys! Quote
wags Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Kyle, Great fish!!! Looks like you guys had a great time. We still need to hit up the secret honeyhole by Lincoln. One of our gun guys has caught some hogs there lately. A 7lb. 2oz., a 6lb. 12oz., a 6lb. 5oz. and a bunch more over five. My biggest of the two times I've been there is only 3lb 13oz. Needless to say I haven't quite figured that lake out yet. > Give me a hollar sometime!!! Jay Quote
Brian1224 Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Nice fish! I've been going out to walnut creek alot latley and last week I caught a 4.5lb largemouth on a wtrmln/red speck worm t Rig. I went out there tonight and I caught 4 bass within in 2hours but none of them were over a 1lb. Quote
IneedAnewScreenName9886691 Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Sweet Fish! Congrats on the great day on water! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 7, 2008 Super User Posted July 7, 2008 Wow! Those are some fine fish. 8-) Quote
Fishin247365 Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Fine job fellas! Those are definately good bass here in Nebraska. You guys ever get down to SE Nebraska, send me a PM and I'll take you over to Burchard by Pawnee City. Some big pigs hanging out in there! Quote
Shad_Master Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Hey fishin..., How is Burchard - haven't been there in a couple of years - had heard some rumors that there was a problem with the dam and that the weeds were choking it out - sounds like maybe not. Quote
Fishin247365 Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Burchard is in good shape right now. The problem with the dam will continue as the cost for repair are rumored to be to expensive. It leaks in the spill tube constantly, the only time when the water gets real low is late summer. But with all the rain this area continues to receive, there are no worry's there!! Another 4.5" last night! As far as the fishing, there's not a ton of visiable shoreline cover to fish. I like jigs when I do find some wood, buzzbaits all the time, spinner baits thru the grass, and senko's. When the water is real clear hard to beat a weightless fluke. I went there about a month ago and I had one small fish around 14", all others were over 17". Also try Iron Horse down by DuBois why you are in the area. Fished that for the first time about a month ago. Awesome place as well. Quote
Shad_Master Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 How big is iron horse compared to Burchard? Which one would you consider the better April lake? Just curious. Quote
Fishin247365 Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Iron horse is about the same acreage as burchard, but is alot different than burchard. We didn't see much vegitation at all. A lot more trees. As far as my pick for an April outing and could only choose one, it'd be Burchard. It gets pressured pretty good, so don't be afraid to change up your lure selection or presentation a little. Quote
PlasticsJunkie Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Those bass are FAT! Nice fish man, you don't see many NE bass get much bigger than that. Quote
