does any one use round BC reels for bass fishing? I have a Abu garcia ambassadeur c4 i use for cat fish in the erie canal but that's it. I seen on Hank parkers show he had on a pistol grip casting rod for crank baits so my wheels started turning in my head. does any one else use them for bassn or are they more a live bait and big fish type reel.

I use a modified Ambassadeur 4600 c3 for crankbaits.  I added some bearings to several parts of the reel to improve casting distance.  The c3 has a 5.1:1 gear ratio and tons of line capacity.  I put a cranking handle on it, and am very happy with it.  It casts a mile and the cranking, even with deep crankbaits, is effortless.  It is definitely a tank, and it shows in the weight.

It is heavier and bulkier than a low profile reel, but it gets the job done, and well.  Many simply prefer the ergonomics of low profile reels to the round reels.

I personally enjoy pulling out the round Abu.

I have a 4600 c4 that I use for bass fishing. It was my second baitcast reel and I've used it for pretty much every technique I use at one point or another. I currently have it spooled with 15 lb mono and use it mostly for lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, and small to medium size swimbaits. It excels at throwing lipless cranks and swimbaits long distances, and my hands are large enough that it's comfortable for me to palm a round reel. I like all my low profile BC's too, but the round Abu's are great reels, especially at their price point, and there's no reason not to use them for bass fishing, other than personal preference.

Shimano TE-200-DC

Shimano Calcutta TE-400

ABU 5600-WS

ABU 6000 (Red)

ABU 6600-D5

Quantum US-300

All are round reels and I use them all for Bass fishing. I also have 5 low profile reels.

My favorite reel in my collection is a round reel - the Conquest 50S. It's got solid construction and will last a long time, and you would not believe how far it will chuck an 1/8 oz shaky head! :)

The Abu round reels are perhaps the easiest reels to take apart and clean/repair of anything on the market.  I've fished with a bunch of them.  I still use an old Quantum Iron IR4 for 99% of my cranking chores and it's still going strong after all this time.

I have 5600C4 I bought for cats a few years ago. Didnt really use it much maybe twice and actually put it back in its box. Well end of last year got it out for bassin and used it for tossing 1/2oz jigs.

I use a 5600 C4 on a 7' MH rod with 65# braid for larger jigs, frogs and swimbaits.

I use the low profile reels now just because I can palm them easier but my old Abu round reels are tanks. You cannot kill them. Easy to take apart and clean and they just work.

ABU 4600 series are sweet reels and they last forever. I still have several that I use often.

I just picked up a 4601C3 for jigs, cranks, and some swimbaits. It came in today and I had a chance to play around with . I definitely think i'll be getting a few more in the future .

I have five 4600C3's from the 90's...Years ago when I quit using Lew's BB reels I bought ABU 4600C3 to replace them. The ratio is 5:3:1 and holds 115 yards of #14.Just recently quit using these bought shimano curados and citica's.Figure if I hold onto the Abu's they will be worth something one day.

Used Curados, Zillions, and Revos until fall fishing last year.  Now I use 4600's, 5500's, 5600's, 6500's, and 6600's.  Even have a couple of the older 5000s.  Even though I have small hands I enjoy using the Amb more, seems to give me more confidence in my fishing.  Have given a lot of my low profile reels to grandson.  Use the 4600UC the most for 75% of my fishing.

(2) CTE200GT

(1) CTE100GT supertuned

One of my CTE200GT is nearly a decade old

and has been used mostly for striper and five

ton boulders! The reel has been serviced on

a regular schedule, but no parts have ever been

replaced. The reel is smoother today than the

day it was bought. Still a dead solid 10!

He's not kidding, either. I've seen him locked in battle with a ten ton boulder on the river, and it ain't a pretty sight. ;D ;D ;D

They are not cheaper if you compare apples to apples. My Shimano TE 2000 DC retails for over $500. The TE-200-GTs that Roadwarrior describes are selling at BPS for $350. It so happens that ABU Garcia has decided as a business model to make their low profile reels a step up in performance and features and therefore more expensive. This not true for every manufacturer, but ABUs are the most popular round reels for bass fishing and that's why it seems they are cheaper across the board. JMHO
