Wammiee Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Looking to spend approximately $350.00 so $300.00-$400.00 setups are welcomed! I prefer spinnerbaits and gonna try Senkos.Fishing locations consist of majority river/dams with reservoirs on weekends. Length 6-7' preferred.Suggestions for Rod/Reel/Line Size? Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted March 30, 2011 Super User Posted March 30, 2011 Dobyns Champion 733 or 734 (all depends on the cover) - $240 Shimano Citica - $120 Yo-Zuri Hybrid 12-15 pound - $10 Out the door for 370 Pesos. It aint a 7 foot even, but you may find you like that extra three inches of length. 1 Quote

Those Champion rods are the real deal. Citica is a good choice on a reel, there are getting to be lots of good reels in that $100-150 price range. Look at the new offerings from Lew's too, a lot of bang for your buck. Or a Pflueger Summit, they can be had for $120-150 too. Quote

As luck happens, one that I own. Keep looking at the flea market... End up with a Loomis BCR GLX rod for $200 - 225. Another popular setup Daiwa Advantage A - $169 or used Revo STX Powell Casting Rod 6'8" Med Hvy EF 683C - $139 I have this rod as well. Excellent choice for senkos & spinnerbaits... and around $299 for the setup. Get the best quality rod you can afford. Most of the big boys for reels in the price range will be quite nice. Everyone has their favorites. Quote
Mr SwimJig Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Shimano Crucial CRCX610MH rod $159.99 and Lews Tournament Pro Reel $179.99 with Yo-Zuri Hybrid line 12lbs test $8.99 That is a very nice and lite setup, I currently have it for throwing spinner baits. SJ Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted April 3, 2011 Super User Posted April 3, 2011 Curado 200e7 or 50e with a Pinnacle Perfecta or Dobyns Savvy. Quote
northern basser Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 If I had that budget to pick a combo I'd get a Lew's tournament pro and put it on a Powell Endurance 723. Quote
L a r r y Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 I would say a 2010 AG Revo Premier and a AG Verdict.....a match made in heaven Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted April 3, 2011 Super User Posted April 3, 2011 For reels -- Revo STX ($200) or Daiwa Advantage HSTA ($170). I'm a big fan of the Dobyns rods as well, and a 3-power Champion ($220) would suit your needs as long as you don't go much above 1/2 oz spinnerbaits. Alternatively, I also really like St Croix Avid. For your uses, I'd recommend either the 6'8" MXF or the 7' MH models. Quote
BassThumb Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 The Dobyns Champion 734c is a fantastic spinnerbait rod and works well with 5-6" Texas rigged Senkos, too. It's a very versatile rod that'll work well with a variety of lures. It is 7' 3" long though, a little longer than what you had in mind, but the extra length comes in handy for long casts and controlling a fish after it's hooked. I bought my second one this offseason because I wanted one for just buzzbaits/chatterbaits. This is a $240 dollar rod, but there will be some spring sales coming up where they will be 10-20% off. I would match that with a Shimano Curado 200E7 that can be found for around $150 on eBay. With a little luck, this combo can be had for around $350 and is an excellent value at that price. Quote
The Doctor Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Dobyns Champion 733 or 734 (all depends on the cover) - $240 Shimano Citica - $120 Yo-Zuri Hybrid 12-15 pound - $10 Out the door for 370 Pesos. It aint a 7 foot even, but you may find you like that extra three inches of length. Thats a nice set up. The new citicas are built similar to the curados (the curado being a bit more polished/refined). The citica works great, I've never had any problems with them and they have enough drag to pitch cover with. Great reel. Much better than the old version of citica. Quote
ofl0926 Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 you could do the shimano curado combo that they have at BPS. it includes the BPS extreme rod i believe Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 The Pflueger President is now only $129. Thats a steal! For a rod...you cant go wrong with anything that says Powell or Dobyns on it. Just make sure you get a 3 or 4 power. Quote
Ol Dirty Basstard Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 You're gonna drop 400 clams on a new combo and you've never fished a Senko? IMHO Wammiee, a $200 reel and a $200 rod, from any company, will put you in a class of gear that you will find little to complain about. My recommendation is to actually handle as many rods & reels as you can. A higher price doesn't always equal the best set-up for you. Like folks have already pointed out, there are great reels, like the Pluegers and the new Lews, that are't budget busters. But get something that feels good in your hand my man! Don't hesitate to pull a few rods from the rack and mount the reels your interested in right there in the shop. You'll be surprised by how many combos, even expensive ones, will feel unbalanced, or bulky or even too small, when you actually do this. But if you're set on popping your cork all at once; maybe you have a gift card or something, you might not want to make it an even split. Myself, I'd put more of my money towards a sensitive rod; especially if I plan on worm fishing with it. Happy shopping! Quote
