MBR844

I'm thinking that it's about time that I get this rod. I have a BCR803 that I mainly use for jigs and worms in the 3/8 - 1/2 oz range. I also have a St. Croix Avid 7' casting rod in MHF that I usually frog fish with, but to me it's too heavy to use for any extended fishing, and the GLX Loomis would be lighter and less fatiguing, at least that's what I'm thinking. I think the 844 would be a good rod for larger spinnerbaits and jig & worm fishing. What do you guys think?

I don't own an MBR844 but lots of folks here do so you should get some feedback.

I can say that you might not want to assume that the Avid 7' MHF is too heavy and that the GLX MBR844C HF would be lighter. Avids are pretty light and I would bet that the MH Avid will be lighter than the H GLX. The MH Avid might even be lighter than the GLX MBR843C MHF. For example, I have both an Avid 7' MF and the GLX MBR842C 7' MF - the Avid is actually 2.7 grams lighter than the GLX - not enough lighter to feel...but it's lighter...

The GLX MBR844C is an exceptional jig and soft plastics rod and is more sensitive than the Avid.  I don't use mine for spinnerbaits. 

I own both of the rods you mention but I don't subscribe to the idea that an extra gram or ounce here or there is going to create more fatigue for me at the end of the day.  I workout regularly, but even if I didn't, I still don't think it would make a difference for me.

When it comes to worm fishing, the MBR844c is all I use. I suppose you could use it for spinnerbaits also for I have used it's sister rod the MBR784c of which is the same action only a shorter rod, for spinnerbaits.

I have used the MBR844c for buzzbaits also and really like it for that, but keep in mind I am no expert when it comes to buzzbaits.

I have also used it for frog fishing in open water or around things such as docks and other wood cover, sea walls, and rocky cover. Not the best choice though for heavy weed areas IMO.

The rod is rated as heavy action but IMO it's more of a MH when compared to other brands heavy action. Pulling in a bass covered with 5lbs of weeds scares me a bit that the rod may break under such load.

As for how heavy the rod is, lightest 7ft rod I have ever owned. there may be lighter out there today, but this rod is plenty light enough to fish all day without any problem.

Although the rod could be used for almost every technique,

mine was dedicated exclusively to jig fishing for the last 5

or 6 years. Since embracing Rage Tail soft plastics, I have

started using the rod for weighted plastics, too. With either

application this is the perfect equipment!

I've had a MBR 844 IMX rod for years and absolutely loved it for weighted soft plastics.  Last year, my first GLX was a 844 and I was amazed at the difference between the 2 rods.  I always thought the IMX was a sensitive rod, but the GLX is just awesome...you will love it.

I would be throwing spinnerbaits with the BCR 803 and dedicate the 844C to worms & jigs as has been suggested. I used to have the 844C in a GLX and broke 2 of them. Sold the expiditor replacement and bought the IMX 844C blank and built a custon worm & jig rod with it. Put a couple of bucks with the left over $ and grabbed another 50 MG. I like the IMX as well as the GLX for worms & Jigs. Save yourself $100. Don't get me wrong, I love some of the GLX line. I wouldn't trade anything for my GLX dropshot rod, but for this application, IMX is better. JMHO

I'm with Ronnie, the IMX is a better blank in my opinion.  I fish most of my 1/2oz and heavier jigs on it.  It's counterpart is the XF 7-2 MH Cumara.

Well...I also have the IMX and it's a great rod, but I still prefer

GLX. If you are patient and keep an eye on our Flea Market,

you can probably pick up the GLX for $250-$275 or the IMX

for $150 or so. I bought a couple at these prices (delivered)

last year.

Ronnie, are you saying you broke 2 of these GLX rods on fish? If that happened you wouldn't need to use the expeditor service, but could have them replaced under warranty..my understanding. I never really tried using the BCR803 with spinnerbaits, I normally use an MBR783 for those. I might give it a try.

One rod I broke casting a heavy jig, the other I broke while rebuilding it (long story). The expiditor service is a "replacement under warranty". No one will do an over the counter replacement of a rod many years old without a receipt. I suggested your using the BCR803 because you mentioned owning it in your original post. I would use the shorter rod for spinnerbaits, I didn't know you had one.  JMHO.

I've got two mbr 844 GLX. I dedicate one for jig and use the other for worm, frog, & occasionally a spinnerbait. I thought of selling one and maybe trying a nrx854 but doubt I could bring myself to part with one. They are a great rod imo
