BassinfromNC Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Just got in mail today. Came with some washers for winding shape, but don't know what that is. Got an idea but can someone explain. Also came with small bottle oil, do i need to do anything with it now? When and where should I use it? I was surprised it reel came in plastic verses a box like other reels. Thanks Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 The washers are added to the spool shaft to make the line wind on evenly. The reel should not need lubing prior to use. There is a lube port that should be identified in the paper work. I strongly recommend having the reel torn down, cleaned and lubed at least annually rather than rely on the lube port. Quote
Super User MickD Posted March 28, 2011 Super User Posted March 28, 2011 It sounds like you have not read the instruction sheet that came with the reel. I strongly recommend that you at least skim over it. Not all reels are the same for something as simple as putting the line on, but do it wrong, and it will not work as well. In my experience, a new Shimano reel will not need more lube until you use it a lot. Follow instructions on what to put into the lube port (most likely reel grease). All other pivot points, like on the bail pivots, the line roller, the handle grips, use reel oil-not just any oil, but a good quality reel oil. Wipe off excess so it doesn't attract dirt. Keep the reel away from dirt, especially sand, and if used in salt water clean it off with fresh water with every use. If you do this you will be washing away some of the oil, so more frequent lubing will be required. Too much lube will make it sluggish, especially when cold. If it starts to feel "catchy," not smooth on retrieve, it needs some lube in the lube port. If the bail gets reluctant to close properly, it needs oil on all the bail pivot points. Love it, but not to death. Quote
