The Ambassadeur squadron just added another member. To join the old-school 5000 and 1500, and the new-age Morrum ZX3600, is a "new-old" 2500CDL. Ā This was from a special run of 100 that was released in 2012 and patterned on the original 2500CDL teal and gold model released in the late 1970's.

Ā

Ā

I remember thinking 35 years ago that the 2500CDLs looked a bit guady but I guess in my old age my tastes have changed. Not an everyday use kind of finish...but sorta elegant.

She might be wearing fancy pants...but everyone's gotta fish for a living. Seems to work - reels in fish...

Beautiful reel Goose! The match with the Green NRX looks nice though it may be tough to find the right app for the pairing.

Ā

Thanks!

Ā

Yeah - I put it on the green NRX primarily for color coordination. Fished it with plastic worms a few times, caught a few bass, but one could grow OLD (and I'm already old enough) taking up slack line with the IPT on that reel. SO, if you notice the last photo, the reel is now on a Legend Xtreme 7'2" MM cranking rod - a much better match-up functionally, and the color match is pretty good as well. Ā The 16 IPT is still slower than I would prefer for general cranking but it worked well in the boat today and seems to be handy for cold-water cranking where you probably should be slowing down a bit.Ā

Ā

This CDL will be an occasional use reel, kept stock, and will probably live mostly on display. I've already got a couple Calcutta 50XTs on hand that are almost as slow as the 2500 and can handle the occasional slow-cranking role. Still, I can see a "beater" 2500 in my future that I can hot-rod a bit...

You have an outstanding collection of "mini families" of reels! I think it is pretty awesome to have so many fun options both modern and vintage to mix and match with. I hear ya on low ratio reels for apps where taking up slack is needed ... just a bit too taxing in this day and age.

New member to the family. new to me that is. Looks good except for one blemish. And I stepped on the box this morning.

Dig that reel, Goose!Ā  I know I've put "high speed" gears in 2500c series reels.Ā  "High speed" being relative, of course.

Ā

Thanks John! Ā Yeah - they have those 6.0:1 gears - you get to 22 IPT with them - a more useful range. This reel will stay stock, but I still have that beater 1500 that may get some 6.0 juice one of these days...

A shorter handle will make it faster.

The Excense is a bad mama jama. Why did you decide to crush the box?

I wish I had done it on purpose. It was early and I was still half asleep.

OK - I just ordered a custom 40mm handle for it.............................................................................. ;)

I have an old "Great Lakes" knuckle buster, with a cork arbor spool - yes, it's cork! - that probably has a handle around 40mm, lol.Ā  I think the GR is like 2:1.

Ā

I just picked up my first "finesse/shallow" spool this week, though this spool was designed with braid in mind so I'm not sure how "finesse" it really is. It's for the 05 Metanium XT and was intended as a saltwater jigging spool so it didn't originally come with the VBS hub. The gentleman I bought it fromĀ installed one on this particular spool though so I was pretty happy about that. I'm going to use it in one of my favorite reels the Chronarch B. Ā

Ā

I'm pretty excited to give it a try I just have to wait until I figure out which rod I want to go with. I don't have any finesse baitcast rods at the moment. On the other hand I have been toying with the idea of spooling it with 20# PP and just using it on my "regular" pitching rod.Ā Ā

This thread was awesome I just started fishing this year and I have so many ideas now for new stuff. I'm gonna be very busy this winter buying new combos for next season. I can't wait to get my first baitcaster and figure out how to use it. I think I'm gonna start with a Tatula and some model of St Croix.

Another Ambassadeur 2500 followed me home.Ā  This is a Burgundy 2500C and was a 1992 JDM release. So, it joins the (left to right) 5000, 1500C, 2500CDL, Morrum ZX3600. Ā I think this should be enough Ambassadeurs for a while... ;)

Ā

gallery_25379_1107_250858.jpg

Ā

The burgundy, black, and chrome finish is a bit more practical than the teal and gold finish of the 2500CDL.

Ā

gallery_25379_1107_96192.jpg

Ā

gallery_25379_1107_248586.jpg

Ā

WooHoo! Ā High Speed 5.3 gears. Ā The 1500C has a High Speed sticker on it as well and has 4.7 gears - in this case high speed means faster than, say, 3.8 gearing. Ā The 4.7 gears in the 1500C and 2500CDL give 16 IPT. Ā The 5.3 gears in this 2500C give a whopping 18.5 IPT - practically a burner...

Ā

gallery_25379_1107_285853.jpg

Ā

18.5 IPT is a good cold-water cranking ratio. Ā Had it on the water today and made a LOT of casts with plugs from 3/8 to 5/8oz. Amazing the range you can get with a reel that has a non-disengaging level wind. Ā Unfortunately, no trophy fish to show for the effort - only this dink that's not much bigger than the Norman NXS crank that it bit. Still, I have to give the reel my usual highest rating - seems to work - reels in fish... Ā (I know - it's a tiny fish......................but at least it's a bass!)Ā

Ā

Thanks! Ā

Ā

Yeah - this burgundy finish on the sideplates looks good and the black frame conceals water staining and grime. Ā The gold frame on the teal 2500CDL shows EVERYTHING and I feel compelled to pull the spool and wipe the frame down after every use. Ā Now, for the burgundy reel, what rod? Ā A Loomis CBR would probably work........but I think it will end up having to "time-share" on a BPS Crankin' Stick. I got plenty of room for more reels...but am having a really hard time to find space for more rods!Ā Ā

Isn't the Loomis spinnerbait rod burgundy as well?Ā  That would match up nice, too.Ā  Love those 2500 reels!

Ā

I went to the Loomis web site and indeed the spinnerbait rod is a closer color match than the CBR series. Ā But I've already got two MH rods with 18.5 IPT reels on them (Calcutta 50XTs) so I have that slow-rolling spinnerbait/chatterbait application covered. Ā Rod selection is something I'll think about over the winter (and that's when the bait monkey gains maximum strength!).

Ā

I appreciate all Ambassadeurs, but I have to admit that I just don't care much for actually using the 5000-size reel - just too big for me. But the 1500/2500 size - much more fun and they hold all the line you need for most bass applications. Ā Too bad they never made a recessed reel foot version of the 1500s/2500s - there is so much distance between the spool and reel foot. It would palm crazy small if that distance was reduced.
