Zpi pg spool

How are you liking this spool in the SV TW?  I have one the the stock spool isn’t really blowing me away even after a flush/oil. I have a SV 1012 spool I want to try in it, but it’s currently full of 17lb floro and I am too cheap/lazy to respool it to try it in the SV TW.

The Zpi pg is a very fast spool in the Steez tw. Brake dial on 6 required some major thumb when throwing a 3/8oz dark sleeper. 7 was a lot more manageable, and 8 required no thumb. I didn’t play with spool tension and try to find a sweet spot though. Definitely not the same as when put in a tdz and you can skip with ease on 3 and loose tension. The stock spool is a good caster from what I’ve heard. I haven’t used mine yet since I went straight to the Zpi. I’ve never owned any sv spool that blew me away. I had the RCS 1012 sv in my monoblock and it casted very well. It’s since been moved to a Steez sv 103 and it’s a good performer in it also. Probably my favorite sv spool so far that I’ve tried. I really dig that spool but I wish it held more line so I could run it with #15 mono or fluoro.

Cool, thanks for the info. It sounds like the ZPI PG might be a too fast for me.  I actually have a second RCS 1012 sv that is still NIB that I was keeping that way with thoughts of selling it to fund a ZPI spool, but I like my other one so much that I think I might just keep it and stick it in the SV TW.  Have you tried the stock SV TW spool in a sv103 yet?  That is where my 1012 sv is living now.   Speaking of the sv103, my 7.9:1 model has a new home...

Picked up an FMJ the other day and did a little yard casting with it today.  It, with the sv103/1012 sv, is a pitching machine and will cast a 1/2oz jig further then I would ever need.  I cannot wait to get it out on the water.

The other rod is a XXX Black Themis with an Alphas FC on it.  The jury is still out on it, I need to wait until I can fish it with warm hands to see if it is sensitive enough to replace my current dropshot rod, a XX DS spinning rod.  I also have not found the sweet spot with the reel to let me cast and pitch tiny plastics without fussing with the brakes.  I have found it with other rods, but the tip on the Black Themis is really fast and I have yet to work it out.  I really like the Alphas FC and think I want to send it out for a tune and upgrade as I think it's a "forever" reel for me.

I put the zillion 1016 sv spool in my sv 103 and it was a big improvement. I don’t have any plans to switch it out. I haven’t used the stock Steez spool yet. Next time out I’m going to compare it to the zillion spool and see if there’s a difference. When put side by side the zillion inductor sits a little closer to the spool base. It’s got me curious to see if it makes any noticeable difference.

Cool.  I think I am close to sorting out my reel/spool matchups.   I have a 6.x:1 sv103 on a MB Hyuga 72H (swimbaits, frogs, mag topwater) that will get two sv103 stock spools, one with 55lb braid and one with 25lb Defier Mono.  Next is a Ringa SSS on a XX Tour Versatile (single hook moving baits) that will get a pair of Zillion SV spools, one with like 40lb briad and one with 17lb floro, depending on water clarity and cover.  That leaves the 7.9 sv103 on a FMJ ( jigs/t-rigs) and a Steez sv tw on a mbr783c (everything in it’s range). One will get the 1012sv and one will get the stock sv tw spool, I just need to test them both in both reels.

In non-dawia news, I picked up this combo for poppers/light topwater.

It’s a Adle50 on a Avid 6’2” M/XF.  I am still warming up to the reel but that rod is quickly becoming a favotate.  It’s great for everything I’ve tried for so far and it’s becoming one of my favorite bushwhacking sticks.

Cabela’s find courtesy of the help from another member on here.  Bargain cave item and looks barely used.  A classic workhorse reel.

Wish I would have held on to my Zillion.

My local tackle shop had their annual parking sale today, where in addition to discounts they also pay state tax. Essentially an additional 9-10% off. (Yes, our sales tax is that high). Picked up 3 rods and was able to finalize my arsenal

St. Croix Mojo Bass : Lew's Speed Spool : Jerkbait

Carolina Custom RX7 : Lew's Speed Spool: Finesse Jigs
Dobyns Fury 735C : Shimano Curado K : Flipping/Pitching
Dobyns Fury 735C : Daiwa Tatula CT : Frog/Topwater
Lews Custom SS Lite : Shimano NASCI : Drop shot

Lews Custom SS Lite : Abu Revo SX : A-rig, swimbait
Powell Mistake : Pro Qualifier : Senko, all-purpose
Lews Custom SS Lite : Lews Tournament MB : Football jig
Lews Custom SS : Shimano Curado K : Heavier flipping/pitching

Lews Custom SS : Shimano Symetre: Shakeyhead

Lews TP1 : Pro Qualifier : Chatterbait

St Croix Mojo Bass : Lew's Speed Spool : Crankbait
St Croix Avidx : Shimano Curado K : Punching
Powell Endurance : Shimano Curado K : Texas Rig

I guess I'm not a one brand one model kind of guy. I like trying out different combos. A few stand out. My football jig combo is stellar, perfect everything. The Carolina Custom medium heavy fast is great for lighter jigs. The Lews TP1 was recommended to me personally by Lew's rod builder Bob Brown over all their other lines, even more expensive ones. I can confirm it's perfect for chatterbaits.

Looking forward to trying out the Endurance and Avidx. They feel great paired with the Curados.

The Purple Monster is finished.  Sv103h with some dress up parts, a 100mm CF handle, and for now a Zillion sv spool.  Rod is a MB Hyuga 72H.  Using it for swimbaits, big topwaters, and frogs.

Very nice outfit FW! That is a great pairing for sure. Have you used the MB rod much yet?

Upgraded my spinning setup. St Croix AvidX 6'8" Medium, extra fast with a Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 2500 reel with Berkley Vanish 8lb test. This is probably the nicest setup ive ever had haha. Will mainly be my top water and worm setup.  Should go nice with my Mojo Bass, Lews speed spool baitcasting rig.

To those curious, CZP01 with an X300 ultra next to it.

I have had it out about a dozen times since I got it over the winter, but sadly no really good bass yet.  It is a really interesting rod, it is for sure a Mod action, but it has a ton of power without feeling stiff.  My first fish on it was a 9" stocker trout who was trying to mate with my S-Waver, it managed to load the rod a little and I was able to land it without ripping the hook out.  I have gotten maybe 8-10 bass with it using lures with large trebles and it is at 1:1 hit/land ratio with them.  I have only gotten a handful of hits on jighook swimbaits and landed about half of them, but that might be me just wiffing the hooksets as my attention tends to wander after an hour or three of crawling a Hudd.  The rod's ratings seem a bit off at the high end, a ~2.5oz Rat is about as heavy as I want to go with it, but on the low end it will cast a 1/2 spinnerbait or frog as far as I would ever want.  All in all, it seems like it's going to be a really versatile "small" big bait stick and I think it fishes it's low end well enough that I will not feel overgunned if I am miles from my car and want to fish a jig or t-rig.   I also want to try it with some DD cranks once I get my kayak up and running for the spring, I think the combo is up for it.

A scant few months ago I scoffed at the idea of matching reels to rods, now I kinda feel like the combo needs to match the lure!

Kidding, but that rat is one of my favorite lures,  I feel like an idiot throwing it, right up until I get bit.

I know! That lure works it seemed like a joke at first but a friend was destroying them on it so I decided to pick one up.

All of those parts can be ordered from Hedgehog studio. Those are made by Avail. They have a handful of colors but they only offer them in royal purple if you’re wanting purple ones.
