Super User aavery2 Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 I have a super dumb question: I just spent the better part of an hour (nothing on tv and am bored) reading this thread. I can understand adding parts, ie: new handles, gears, bearings etc. However, doing custom "paint jobs" on a fishing reel to match the rod? My fishing arsenal: 8 Shimano bantam 101's, purchased between '97 and '05. 2 Shimano Stradic 100's purchased in '96.(wood handles) 1 Shimano Stradic 4000 purchased in 2001, 3 Shimano Stradics 2500's purchased in '05-06. All mounted on St Croix Premier rods. All of the reels were $120.00 and all the rods were $80.00. I am retired and fish 80-100 days a year. I spend 2-3 weeks every spring fishing the southern "top 100" ie: Guntersville, Ky. Lake. Rayburn, Tablerock, Toho, Big "O" etc. None of my reels have ever been touched by a repair man. I clean and lube them every spring and fish all summer. Not one of these reels has ever failed me. When I was on Guntersville in March, the guide made a comment: " Those old "green" Shimanos never quit do they" Just give me my "old green" Shimanos and old Stradics and I'm a happy (fisherman) camper. So what's the question? Quote

Tim Kelly Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 New knobs for the BFS They look great! Out of interest, how do you like your Aldebaran? I picked one up a couple of weeks ago and I'm slightly underwhelmed by it. Quote
bootytrain Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 They look great! Out of interest, how do you like your Aldebaran? I picked one up a couple of weeks ago and I'm slightly underwhelmed by it. Its actually my favorite reel. What is underwhelming about it to you? Maybe I can help? Quote
Tim Kelly Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 I expected it to be a better finesse caster I suppose. It does 1/8 fine, but any lighter it's no where near as good as my little morrum 3601 sx with an avail spool. Love the fast retrieve speed, but it just doesn't seem to be much of in improvement in light bait casting than a curado to me. Quote

I've thrown SK Bitsy Minnows which are 2.5 grams or 1\16th a good distance as well as 1/16th rooster tails even farther. What rod are you using? That's going to be 75% of the battle in throwing light lures. I use mainly a Major Craft Volkey BFS rated down to 1\32. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 It's an MHX blank I made up for it. Tried the Volkey, but prefer my MHX. Going on holiday to Spain tomorrow chasing bass, so I might learn to love it a bit more there. Quote

I also have a Revo LTZ and I'm hard pressed to see a difference in performance between the 2. Quote
IAY Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Anyone in this forum have experience with KTF honey comb vs Avail? Quote

Super User Master Bait'r Posted May 14, 2014 Super User Posted May 14, 2014 Those knobs really complement the lines on the reel. Looks space age. Like it. I was thinking the same thing. I like the ergonomics and the finish- they look very comfortable. I looked around for a while yesterday and couldn't find them... Booty where did you get these? Quote
