Big-B_2579 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I am looking into buying a new setup for cranking ( med. / deep ). I am definitely on a budget , looking to spend no more than $100 a piece for rod and reel (don't fish for $$$ , just a weekend warrior) . I have heard a lot of very good things about the new Lew's speed spool reels (big Shimano fan) , and just wondering opinions of these reels for cranking. My local sporting goods has them on sale for $99. Also very confused about the ROD end of the whole deal , as far as getting the right power/action for cranking. So , if you like the speed spool idea , pair me a good $100 rod with it . Thank you for advice and opinions. Quote
smallwatermayhem Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I say you get a BPS Pro Qualifier 5.4:1 with a 7' M BPS Crankin' Stick. A perfect cranking set-up, IMO. But if you'd rather get the Lew's reel, pairing it up with any 7' M rod will due. I prefer a composite or full glass rod though for Cranks. Check out the Crankin' Stick's (not sure what material they're made of..) Quote
STK001 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I'm in the market for the same kind of deal my friend. You can get that new Bass Pro Crankin Stick for around $70 which looks like an awesome deal. For the money that Bass Pro stuff is pretty darn sweet. I have some of the Extreme rods and I really like them. You might check out those Wright and McGill Skeet Reese Rods. That crankbait rod is around $90. I have the Spinnerbait/Worm model and it's been a great spinnerbait rod......As for the reel, I'd look into spending a few more bucks and get the Curado E200, you can get it for 148 on Ebay and I promise you it's worth the extra 48 bucks to invest in over anything in the $100 catergory....you'll be happy. If you pick up a Bass Pro Crankin stick and that Curado you're looking at around $220 total.....sounds like a great combo to me. I may have talked myself into right here! ;D good luck! jmo..... Quote
21farms Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 get the 5.4:1 lew's speed spool (they're only $90 online shipped) and pair it with an abu-garcia veritas in the 7' medium power/mod-fast action. cranking rods are my favorite rod category and i have dobyns, powells, lami's, g.loomis, and that that particular veritas definitely holds its own in comparison. Canga Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 no experience with the lews reels short of picking one up briefly in cabelas... however, the PQ is a pretty solid reel for 100 (or less if you can get one on sale) on the rod side, the bps crankin stick is a pretty solid rod, tho it is a little on the heavy side (tho i have the 7'6" MH telescoping one, heh). even so its a good rod, it works great for the purpose i got it, deep cranking. might want to look into the st croix mojo bass cranking rods, they have 1 graphite (7" MH, 4.0oz) and 2 glass (7'4" M, 4.9oz, and 7'8" MH 6.3oz) the graphite is 100, glass 120. or since you said your a shimano fan, i have heard good things about the compre, which is also around your price range, at 100-110 not sure on the BPS rod warranty, but the st croix is 5 years (and st croix has a great warranty, imo) and the shimano is limited lifetime Quote
Big-B_2579 Posted March 23, 2011 Author Posted March 23, 2011 Thanks guys , for the help. I know about the Shimano reels , especially the curado (already have one , and two of the old chronarchs , and a Calcutta for a backup reel . I love every one of them.) , just can't quite spend the money now. And I'm very glad someone said something about the Mojo Bass rods , I already have the plastics one , and I love it . That's the main one I was considering. May still look into the bps , though. Quote
