Goggle Eyes Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I had all my baitcasters respooled with Yo Zuri Hybrid last year for a trip to KY Lake. Unfortunately with my kids' sports schedule I really wasnt able to fish much at all after that trip! I was looking at my reels, they are all still full of line and we are planning another trip to Kentucky Lake whenever the lake level permitts. Would you purchase new line????? My guide suggested it but I dont have many miles on this line at all. Thoughts? Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 15, 2011 Super User Posted March 15, 2011 If it was stored out of the sun, and an area where the temps were not overly high or low the line will be fine. Quote
Goggle Eyes Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 Yeah, I store my gear in the basement where its nice and cool. Seems like a waste to buy all new line. Typically I've found with Yo Zuri, you really only need to replace when you get low. I am not sure if it becomes brittle with time or not. Quote
Super User flechero Posted March 15, 2011 Super User Posted March 15, 2011 Take one of them out in the yard and cast it.... I think you'll find that hybrid from last year will have a lot of memory. A few casts will probably tell you all you want to know. If it were my trip, I would change it. Quote
B A S S E R Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 If they were in your basement then you should be good to go. Especially with yo-zuri Quote
Intrepid Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 its probably fine, i would go with it, why waste a bunch of line? at most i might strip off the first couple feet. if you store line on a spool year round you can store it on the reel year round and it be fine. some people replace line every trip, i think its a bit excessive unless the reel is just low on line. i never replace line unless its low or it was bad when i bought it, it normally doesnt just go bad for me unless its a reel i havent used in years... WanderLust Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 KVD Line & Lure treatment overnight. Cast them out on the yard the next day to see how it responses. Do a couple reties and tension tests to tell if its brittle. I'm completely OCD so I would change it but just to have something to do waiting for the thaw. Quote
Super User Alpster Posted March 15, 2011 Super User Posted March 15, 2011 All my reels will get new line at least annually, much more often if I am fishing a lot. Nothing like fresh line to make a great trip better. Increases confidence for me. Heading out to the KY Lake Roadtrip next month and all my reels (12 total) will get new line. I buy in bulk to keep costs down. Ronnie Quote

Super User NorcalBassin Posted March 15, 2011 Super User Posted March 15, 2011 I wouldn't be in a rush to throw out a lot of potentially good line. Strip off about 20 yards, spray it with KVD L&L conditioner, throw a few practice casts... and odds are that it will be good as new. Quote
Goggle Eyes Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 Sweet, thanks for the input (again). Now if Kentucky Lake will just stabilize to some degree, I'm ready! Quote

I take mine out after winter, hook my line on my pickup or something stable and stretch almost the entire spool over a long distance. Leave it for a couple hours or so(working the garden or mowing, something i can do and watch it just in case). That normally fixes all my memory issues from being stored for winter. Quote

I was going to suggest streatching it out like that too although I don't feel it's necissary to keep it like that for a coupple hours. A few minutes works for me. Quote
