I am only chartering trips for them now not hourly like I did last year (economy) So I have 3 BC reels that were personal but I used their Sahara 2500s and I loved them. But they aren't that cheap. I just got a job as a Kayak Fishing guide for a local company too, so I want to get one good reel and rod combo that I could use for both. I have always been impressed with Shimano Spinning reels. But what else is out there? I am open to other options. I don't want to go over $80. I might be able to get it for cost through work so We will see. Opinions? I want to match it up to a Medium rod for just overall fun, I'll be fishing for trout, redfish, and LMBs Quote

Abu Soron or Shimano Stradic on a Star Stellar Lite rod or Hurricane Redbone mh 10/20 rods. You never know what you are going to run into out there, I would not go under armed. Quote

There are a few guys here with plenty of experience in both waters, but I'm not one of them. Hopefully a couple of these guys will post with a few suggestions. I posted because I wanted to say that is one NICE fish in your avatar. What's the cost of housing in your area? ;D I would love to retire to such an area where I could catch bass like that, AND do some saltwater fishing. Quote

Super User Hammer 4 Posted March 14, 2011 Super User Posted March 14, 2011 I use my 2500 Sharah, and Stradic in the salt for fishing for bay bass, hali's ect. Just rinse em off with fresh water, and clean them more often. I use mine at least once a week in the salt, and a couple times in fw. Quote

I have caught everything from small bass to 80lb tarpon on it , a few wraps of mono backing and fill the rest up with #15 power pro. The rod I use is a St.Croix TIS76MF. Quote

Crabcakes Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 If you're fishing in salt infrequently it's not really a huge deal. Just don't dunk it. If you fish salt a lot I'd recommend a shimano saragossa. It's basically an overbuilt stradic with simpler internals that make it very easy to break down and clean should your reel get salt or sand inside. Gosa's are way more than 80 dollars though. I'd also recommend penn slammers and shimano spheros. Quote

The spheros is also an offshore reel, it's decent but not all that smooth but built well and is priced around $129, I have 2 of them. The gentleman wants a reel for inshore use as well LMB, the stradic or saros are much better suited, soron stx or the soron sx would also be good choices. Quote
