Dobyns rods are my favorite rods out there. I own 5 of them and 2 of them are the gen2 champion extremes which are by far my favorites.  The 2nd generation are definately better than the first but I never had an issue with them. There is a rod in there lineup for everything and the warranty is second to none. If u could tell me what applications u are thinking of getting one for I might be able to help u with ur decision.

I absolutely love the rods. I have 16 of them, and have my eye on ordering a few more shortly.

There is obviously a rod for EVERY application, but the nicest thing is, everyone has a different preference for what they want in a rod for each application. There are so many rods to choose from, there are literally 5-7 rods that you can use for many applications. This may be confusing for some guys, but most guys that know what they want for each application, it makes life much better. There's no compromises with Dobyns Rods.

Please feel free to PM me with any questions. I'm glad to help.

BTW Brokeju congrats  on having your photo published in "The Lunker Club" section of the Sept/Oct 2009 issue of Bassmasters.

I own a couple Gen 2 Dobyns models and I cannot say enough good things about these rods.

I'm still using my Gen1 rods and I still love them. I now have 4 Gen2's and they are top of the line. No problems at all. All I use is Dobyns.

The Champion 683C is one that I have matched up with a CH50MG.

If you like split grip, this rig is sweet! The rod is crisp and responsive.

My combo has as much bling-bling as I can stand, black, silver and blue.

I'm sure you will like the Dobyns rods.

Hey RW what application are you using your 683c for ? I have been looking at that rod for my texas rigs in moderate to heavy weeds. how's the sensitivity and weight compared to your other rods? I'm planning on matching it up with 51mg .

If you're fishing weeds, I would really recommend a 4 power rod, it's just a little on the safe side. IF you enjoy a fight on lighter line and lighter rods, then by all means the 3 power is fine. But if you don't want to play the fish, and you just want to get her in, go with the 4 power rods.

Brokeju, your right on the money. The specs on the 684 are much closer to the specs on the rod i'm currently using (st croix triumph 6'6'' mh) and i would not want to go down in power. Do you know if there is much differance in weight and feel between the 684 and 704 ?

I have a 705 on the way for my 1/2 oz and up jigs and will be using braid but think i'm going to go with 15lb big game for my texas rig rod. will be casting 3/16 - 3/8 oz.

After fishing the 683C for awhile, I would rate it comparable

to a G. Loomis IMX, medium heavy/ fast action with a firm tip.

Specific applications are for any single hook 1/4 - 3/4 oz lure

or bait.

Muskie,

I don't fish 6ft rods, I also only have 2 or 3 7fters and 12+ rods over 7'3. My 7'3 rods are lighter then most 7ft rods on the market, so I can't imagine you having any trouble with a 7fter.

I can't imagine you'd feel any difference in a 6'8 vs 7ft with these rods, as they all balance extremely well. I feel there's a huge advantage with longer rods, and if it were me, I'd grab the 734. I have 2 733's and a 734 and they are the greatest all around rods out there.

I throw Senkos, T-Rig brush hogs or  other plastics, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, chatterbaits, smaller jigs, ratltraps, all on a 734.

I can't compare the two, but I really liked to power and action of the 704c. If they made it in full cork I wouldn't have sold it.

Should take a look at the 734. You have the option between full cork or split grip. Most versatile rod in the entire lineup.

To anyone who reads this, if you have any specific questions on rods, and I don't post back on here, please feel free to send me a PM. I'm glad to answer any questions or help with rod suggestions.

I really wanted to get that rod originally, but I still have to carry them in a Honda Civic. If we had a bigger car then it wouldn't matter. I will probably pick up a 734 once I get out of school and get an SUV. I definitely didn't sell the rod bc it was a bad rod. The best balanced rod I have fished so far.

I have a Scion tC , not much bigger then a Civic, and I get them in with ease.

My girlfriend (Had until last week, stolen) a 94 Civic Coupe. I got 3 8ft rods in, 2 7'6 and 4 7'3 rods all in at once with ease.

Just get a stick jacket to cover them .

It's just so hard to find someone that has actually paid retail for a new Dobyns. They seem to have tons of pro-staffers on ever board I visit. The Texas Fishing Forum has dozens. I have no doubt Dobyns makes a good rod...I know a few guys locally that are staffers and they wouldn't just endorse anything. However, I can't help but wonder if they hand out 'pro-staff' positions just to sell rods. You generally buy 10 or more rods when you become a staffer for a rod company, and it just seems weird when you have more pro-staff than customers.

That seems funny to me, Natural, that you would say that. We have 1 dealer in Texas that has sold over $50,000 in rods at retail alone, and that doesn't count any of our other Texas dealers. Just because they have Dobyns in their signature doesn't mean the are on the prostaff but just supporting a rod they like or believe in. I am the prostaff director/coordinator for Dobyns Rods and I can assure you that we do not put just anyone on staff to sell rods, they have to meet certain qualifications to even be considered. Maybe you should meet up with one of them and try a rod out before making claims such as this on an open forum. This isn't the first such post that you've made. Thanks to the guys that have supported and commented on how well they like the rods!

Hey Andy,

Welcome aboard!

I have one Dobyns rod that I like just fine. Maybe I'm not a split

grip guy, but I'm going to give my rod a workout for a year or so.

I have the Champion 683C matched up with a CH50MG and it's

special!

Maybe you should talk with Glenn about becoming a sponsor,

it's not expensive. I think that after Gary winning the US Open,

the whole story becomes a lot more interesting.

Hmm, my 7' fters already sit right up against the shifter and I have to move them to the side already when I put it in drive. I am assuming you put the 8 fts up on the dash? The stick jackets are a good idea and I guess I never really thought of them for any other reason besides on a boat locker. I may look into a Dobyns for a frog rod in the near future. Sorry about the car dude. Our neighbor had a their toyota matrix stolen about a month ago from right in front of our apt. They love Honda's and Toyota's for some reason.

I don't live in Texas so I can't comment on that, but I can say the rods sell VERY well out here in California. Each store I go into, has very few left if any. Several of my buddies have 3-10 of the G2 rods, and they paid retail for every one of them. I have purchased many of my rods at full retail price. You may see quite a few guys promoting the rods, but that doesn't always mean they're on the staff, plain and simple a lot of guys love the rods. I know 3 guys in particular who are in no way affiliated with Dobyns and I see them posting about the rods all over the place.

uicdent11 - I got the stick jackets originally for my rod locker, but man have they saved my guides on several occasions pulling rods in and out of my car. They are awesome. The trick for the car, if you want to call it that, is just lean the front seat back a little bit and slide one in at a time. They should go in with ease, and no they weren't on the dash board. The jacket really does help a lot though. I'll take a picture of how they sit today if you're truly interested in seeing how easy it is. Just PM me your email.

Well i finally got to fish with my 705c and i have a big problem. I love this rod and need to buy more  ;D. This rod seems powerful yet light and loades up nicely on the cast. I have decided to go with a 704 for my texas rigs. I tried my 705 with a spro frog and it casted very nice so i'm thinking of getting a dedicated frog rod. Trying to decide between 735 and 736. The 705 seems to be rated in between those two rods as far as weight ratings and i love the way it casts . Do i go with 735 or 736 ?

I'm glad you like the rod, now you see why I talk about them so much. My frog rod is a 736 and I have absolutely no complaints. Quite a few fish just shy of 8lbs and one that went 8 1/2 with the rod. Not a single problem. It really is up to you. Depending on where you throw your frogs, heavy cover or only slight cover and in open water, that should be your determining factor. If you want to shoot me a PM with more information on your fishing, I can try to help you figure it out more.
