.....for leader of course. What else do you think I'd use mono for ?  :)

Seriously though, I've been using Maxima Mean Green, and Seaguar Carbon Pro, for several years, and it works fine, but it's pricey. Honestly, I'm starting to think any premium mono, might work fine.... even some that are not neccesarily premium :) LOL

Oh, and I NEVER buy leader material on those stupid little 25 or 30 yard spools. I buy 250 to 300 yard spools, normally intended as a main line, as I tie a lot of leaders.

One other thing, I'm not going to make a special internet order, for a spool or two of mono, so I need to find some thing that is readily available in most decent walk-in tackle stores.

Suggestions please,

Thank you,

Fish

It appears to me that you do mostly open water fishing and the type of fish you catch do not have razor sharp gill plates, how abrasion resistant does it need to be?  I catch a lot of my fish off the beach with rocks and coral and I cut my own leaders from Ande mono or Big Game with little problems, an occasional cut off does happen due to the nature of the type of fish and conditions ( that's fishing) but wire is out of the question.

Offshore is a different story, cutting your own leaders don't hack it out there, quality abrasion leaders are mandatory for success.

Berkley Big Game :)

I don't know what it sales for out in Cali but I pay $6.99 for a ¼ lb spool @ Academy.

Big Game is tough to beat on casting rigs.

For mono, I've always had good luck with Stren and Suffix. Both are fairly cost effective.

If you're into copoly... Yo-zuri hybrid and CXX are great as well.

Big Game is the only mono I use. It is inexpensive and performs well. Try it Chris, you will like it.

Chris only wants the mono to use as leader line, not main line........he uses nothing but braid and spinning gear.

At least that's my interpretation of his post.

Big Game is some seriously strong line.  I don't have enough experience with it to really comment on it's abrasion resistance.  I've used Ande for 30 years and have never had a complaint.  It's cheap and works darn good.  The one thing with Ande, when you buy 15 pound line, expect it to break at 15 pounds.  If you're looking for brute strength, something like Big Game, CXX, or a co-poly like Yo-zuri may be the better choice.  I've found that co-polymer lines are generally more abrasion resistant as well.

Since you are not going to use it as main line Chris, you want cheap and abarssion resistant well, in that department of abrassion resistant I don 't think anybody beats CXX and looking at it from the money it 's quite cheap too. Big Game and Xt are great but nowhere near CXX.

Cheap + abrasion resistant = CXX ;D ;D

6# CXX is my favorite leader material on spinning gear. It ties a really strong line-to-leader knot and the knot is very small to boot.

Chris,

CXX is very available at just about every shop, tough as nails, and dirt dirt dirt cheap. It's tough to beat!

Much thanks guys. I think I will go with the Big Game.

CXX is probably great stuff.... But one time about 10 years ago, I had a bad experience with P-Line for leaders. Granted, that was their old Flouo Clear (not CXX), which might have improved since then, or, I might have just gotten a bad / old spool to begin with (shelf life is one thing I don't have to worry about much anymore, except for my leader material of course).

If I find any significant difference between Big Game and Maxima Ultra Green, I'll post my findings here.

Thanks,

Fish

There's no such thing as a good spool of Fluoroclear, LOL.  Its nothing like CXX.  Big game will do, its stretchy, though.
