endless Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 How are the Lews baitcasters? I want to believe it is the ss1h but I'm not sure. My local tackle shop is selling one for $89.99. All I know about is it's 10 bearings, 6.4:1 ratio, MCS. It felt smooth in my hands but are they good reels? Quote
soopd Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I purchased 2 the other day even though I have read some bad reviews on them. I had a buddy order me 2 at his cost and I could not pass them up. I purchased the 5.4:1 and the 6.4:1. I fished with them all day and they felt amazing. Of course this is the most expensive reel I have purchased. I am very thrifty. We will see how they hold up with the abuse they will take from me. I can tear up a steel ball with a needle. Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I can't comment on the SS1 but I did just buy the Tournament model in 6.4 to 1. I did my home work first and the reviews are collectively very positve and I see why. I have two 2010 Revo Premiers and I would match my Lews with the Premier for initial performance. It would be premature to comment on durability. This reintroduction of an old brand name deserves serious consideration. The mark of satisfaction is when a consumer is a repeat buyer. I have another on order. I will share more as I have the time to put it to the test. Quote
Mr SwimJig Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Well I got my Lews Tournament Pro Bait Caster last weekend and have been putting it through its paces as much as the weather will allow me. The reel is very solidly built and is incredibly smooth and looks awesome. Not sure about the knobs yet, but they haven't caused me any problems yet and they are definitely better then those foam grips that came on my Revo Premiers and my Patriarch XTs. So first day out I did some pitchin with the reel and it is very smooth and I had no problem pitchin and hitting my target every time. The retrieve is very smooth and the drag is very smooth as well. Caught 6 nice fish on it, nothing over 2lbs though. I was using a 3/8oz jig on a Micro Magic 6' 9" MH rod. This combo was just unbelievably smooth and powerful. Next day out I decided to try some moving baits so I tied on a Strike King Red Eye Shad and went back out to the same lake. The reel casts very smoothly and very effortlessly. The retrieve was very smooth and once again the drag was very nice and smooth and powerful. So 2 days out with this combo, about 3.5hours of fishing time and I can honestly say that I am more then pleasantly surprised with this combo. Only time will tell how it holds up over the summer and constant day in and day out use. But as for right now I am very impressed and am adding a couple more to the arsenal for this summer. I will update as I get to use this combo more. SJ Quote

endless Posted March 13, 2011 Author Posted March 13, 2011 But isn't the tournament series different from The Lews SS1? Quote
endless Posted March 13, 2011 Author Posted March 13, 2011 First pic is the one I'm looking at. Speed spool $99 Second pic is the one I think you all are speaking of $149? Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted March 13, 2011 Super User Posted March 13, 2011 The one we're talking about is the $179.00 model. http://www.***.com/Lews_Tournament_Pro_Speed_Spool_Casting_Reel/descpage-TPSS.html Quote
soopd Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I purchased the $89 model and I like it so far. The only difference between it and the $129 model is the $129 has dual breaking system. Quote

soopd Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I have had them about 1 week. Fished about 8 hours using them and I caught some fish with them. I will be fishing 2 times this week with them as well. I use one of them for cranking and one for worms and jigs. They are real smooth, cast well, and fit in my hand perfect. If I have a chance to buy another reel I will purchase another one based off of one day of fishing if that tells you anything. Only time will tell how the long term durability will be. Quote

The only difference between it and the $129 model is the $129 has dual breaking system. actually, the TSS has an swept aluminum drag star that clicks versus the SS's straight plastic non-clicking drag star. also, the drags utilize different materials as well (carbon composite with 14 lbs. of resistance vs. rulon with 10 lbs.). i'd be willing to bet that the SS's cast control cap is plastic versus metal for the TSS. the metal-for-plastic swap no doubt accounts for the TSS's 0.2 ounce heavier weight. finally, the handle on the SS looks like it is cast aluminum whereas the handle on the TSS looks to be either forged or machined. oh, and don't forget to take advantage of the lew's offer for a free lew's hat, long-sleeve shirt or gear bag with purchase.
