MMan16 Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 I have been looking to get another reel. I am thinking of getting a low gear reel so I've been looking at the winch and the Toro. The Toro I'm looking at is on sale for 179 so its actually cheaper than the winch. My question is to the people who have had these reels what do you mainly use them for and how do you like them? Also, the reel is on sale at TW but only the left handed one can anyone shed some light on why the right isn't? I'm just curious as to why I would be getting the left anyway. Quote
Evans Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 I have a winch that I use for crankbaits, picking up another one at the end of this week for swimbaits. The reel is the best reel I have ever used IMO. It casts a lot further than any other reel I have and is smoother than my others. I think the reason they are selling just the lefty is because they are discontinuing the lefty in the toro series. This is not 100% certain and just based on abu garcia's website. They no longer have the lefty version listed. I think the biggest difference between the two is spool capacity. Other than that, doesn't seem to be a real big difference between the two unless I am missing something. Like I said, I have the winch, and if the toro is just as good or better than the winch, than it is definately a good reel to own. Quote
WanderLust Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 The Toro Winch is a great reel as well. I have a 2010 Winch, great reel for cranks. Super smooth, nice drag and casts great. Quote
Whets Lines Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 If you are going to be using this mainly for bass fishing, you want to get the Revo Winch. The Toro Winche's are huge. They are very wide. I would never get one for bass fishing. Now, if I were muskie fishing, I may consider one because of the extra line capacity. But I'd probably go with the Revo Winch either way. Other than that consideration, I'd never get one. Do yourself a favor and try to go to a store and look at these side by side. Whether you can save money or not, the Toro is not, in my opinion, the one you want. I've attached a photo of a Toro and a Standard-sized Revo. Note the extra width on the Toro which is at the top of the photo. Hope this helps... Whets 8-) Quote
rubba bubba Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 You could get a set of 5.4:1 gears for $25 for the Revo. I did this for a couple of my S's. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 8, 2011 Super User Posted March 8, 2011 I have the Toro(not the winch) and it is a bit bulky but I bought it because I bass fish in water loaded with musky and didn't want a musky to f'up my reel. Spooled with mono. All I throw is cranks and spinners on it. I like it. Let me say this was my first quality low profile after using Ambasseduer C3's for the last 25 years, so I'm used to a larger reel. Quote

They're addictive I was looking at some of the round reels but everyone says there to bulky. On the other hand I hear there good with durability. I want something slow for cranks, spinnerbaits, jigs and occasional swimbaits. What do you guys think? Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 8, 2011 Super User Posted March 8, 2011 They're built, or at least used to be, like tanks. I haven't purchased one in at least 15 years. and that one I just had serviced for the first time last year because it was making noise. Like I said I can't seem to put it down. I have a C4 I got a few years ago and it's even bigger than the 3. I can cast that one but I normaly use it just for salmon or trolling. Quote
Whets Lines Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Get the low-profile Revo Winch. It casts excellent, is easily palmable, durable, and will work perfect for what you want. Whets 8-) Quote
0119 Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 The pic above to compare the Toro to a standard Revo actually shows two Toro's! A difference between the 50 and the 60 I suppose. I cast a Curado 300DSV for hours with fatigue brought on mostly by the heft of the lure more than the size of the reel. I find the Toro to be lower in profile but wider than the Curado 300. Noticibly so. Because of that I find the Toro more comfortable but only in the 50 size. Wait till the new Curado 500 comes out this year, that'll be a monster. Quote
Whets Lines Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 0119, you are right about the photo. my mistake. I was in too much of a hurry to find an image and post it. I don't own either. I have just looked at them and played with them on some rods. I didn't like them personally for everyday bass fishing with crankbaits. I was just trying to give some perspective. Mman16, whichever you decide to go with will be good. They are all Abu's which I hold in high regard. And, after using them, like with larger round reels, I'm sure you will get used to how they feel and work. Good luck. Whets 8-) Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 The Toro is a large reel. I see it being used for BIG swimbaits. The Winch is an outstanding reel. I have three and love them. I actually prefer the Winch over my other Revo models. Shop, shop, shop. Picked mine up on an instore special for 179.99 each. Quote
