HookSetDon Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 is that even a good idea? will the chemicals in the paint affect the integrity of your rod? most definetly will void warranty, that stuff aside i think youll have a tough time keeping it nice, as soon as u get a few bends in the rod i bet it will start to flake Quote

There is more than 1 rod company out there right now that are painting their blanks. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Blanks can be painted. Something like Krylon Fusion or automotive bumper paint will flex with the rod. You'll want a clear coat too. The challenge would be masking off the guides well enough to get a clean look. I'm assuming this is an older or less expensive rod since you're playing around with it. If warranty is a concern, you can contact the manufacturer to ask repercussions. Painting by itself will not cause a blank failure. Quote
stratosjoe Posted April 7, 2011 Author Posted April 7, 2011 thanks to all, yeah I have a old favorite for tubes and I thiought I would give it a shot Quote
ejtaylor822 Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 You can definitely paint the rod. To do it right though you really need to take the guides off, paint and re-wrap. Otherwise it will look a little odd depending upon the original color/finish of the blank. To paint the rod scuff it up with a scotch-brite pad to rough up just a little for the paint to adhere too. The Krylon fusion is the best I have found for the $$$. Quote

Super User .RM. Posted April 7, 2011 Super User Posted April 7, 2011 Yup sure can, just like ejtaylor, and DVT stated, but is better done on a blank before the build than after or even on an older rod. You will need to take care to really clean and remove all of the old thread finish and blank coatings (un-less a matte finished blank). If not then you may have problems getting the paint to coat the un-prepared area. Good Luck! Quote
BrASSmonkey Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Simply painting over the existing finish will increase weight significantly. If you want to do the best job of this possible, you would be best served by removing all of the guides, stripping the finish, lightly scuffing to promote paint adhesion, then spraying with the paint and coating with a clear coat. If it sounds like a lot of work to do it properly, it's because it will be. Quote
