madbass Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Looking for opinions on using a 7' med./fast Extreme rod for deep crankin. Anybody have any experience and/or useful input? Quote
Super User CWB Posted March 3, 2011 Super User Posted March 3, 2011 I use a 7'6" med. with retractable butt section for all my crankin. Works great for me. They're on sale at BPS for $69.97 too. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Not sure about the BPS extreme in particular but i have a medium rod and it does not do well for deep divers. It seemed like it was just underpowered for the weight and resistance that you get on the DD crankbaits. I even put a 4.7:1 reel on it to see if it would help but to no avail. Its great for everything up to about 10' .. I have since moved to a MH for deep crankin. Quote

BassinBoy Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 BPS Extreme rods are good rods. I don't have any experience with them cranking though. I think you'll be more than happy with it for cranking! Good luck Quote
Guest beowulfx71 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 BPS use to sell a few telescopic Extremes for crankin, I think they are part of the Woo Daves series. Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 4, 2011 Super User Posted March 4, 2011 Outstanding rod. Go for it. I would rather use it than my G. Loomis for crankbaits. Pair it up with an E5. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted March 4, 2011 Super User Posted March 4, 2011 ... I have since moved to a MH for deep crankin. X2 I have the 7'mf Extreme - one of my favorite rods. Good for lipless cranks, lighter spinnerbaits & buzzbaits, shallow to medium cranking, etc. I've used it for Deep Little N's down to 12 feet or so. BUT, any deeper, I think you'd be happier with an MH. Quote
madbass Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 Thanks for the replies. I was unsure about this rod because it seemed like it may be too stiff. It is a little bit stiffer than my 7'MF Pro Finnese-which I like for shallow/mid-depth cranks. But with what I'm reading about stiffer is better for deep runners, I think this will work well. I generally favor lighter action rods, so I'm not sure that I would like a MH, but the advice helps. Quote
BassinBoy Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I read an article today that said Rick Clunn likes using 7' heavy rods for cranking sometimes. Talk about stiff! So I'm sure your rod will definitely work. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted March 5, 2011 Super User Posted March 5, 2011 the Extreme XTR70MT-Crank is my deep/heavy cranking stick and i love it. these rods are a heavy rod which i like when tossing the bigger cranks. Quote
