BigGame0892 Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Can really only comment on the glass cranking rods. You're going to love that 705CB Glass - perfect for what you intend to use it for. The 704CB glass seemed just a tad too whippy or underpowered for my taste, but still a heck of a rod! Quote
MMan16 Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I have the766c. I have had it for 2yrs and use it to flip and throw frogs. It's a good rod and i have nothing negative to say about it. Also, I would imagine it would do pretty good throwing large swim baits. I haven't tried it but I think it would fair well. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 1, 2011 Super User Posted March 1, 2011 The two I have are the SS743C and 765CB Glass. The 734 is my primary jig rod, its paired with a Revo STX-SH which is proving to be an outstanding pairing. The 765 I have not had a chance to use much but has been great so far. Send an PM to David P (sorry Dave for keep dropping your name), he can answer any questions about Dobyns rods you have. He answered a lot of questions about them before I bought my first one. Glad he did I got a different one then I was originally going to and its perfect. Quote
Super User David P Posted March 2, 2011 Super User Posted March 2, 2011 704CB - I haven't used the glass, I use the regular 704CB, but EVEN THAT in my opinion is too soft for Square Bill crankbaits. It's the ULTIMATE ripbait rod, and I throw poppers on it sometimes too, but I really don't like it for square bills, especially with the thicker hooks on most square bills and the cover they're fished in. The 705 CB is a great choice for what you listed. Be careful, there's TWO, the MF and the F. Both are great rods, and just a little different. One has a slightly faster tip. Lot of that is personal preference which one you prefer. Can't go wrong with either though. The 733 Savvy is a great all around rod, and whenever you can, I would opt for the 7'3 vs 7'0 rods. The longer rods help you cast further, help move more line on the hook sets, and just allow for a bit more error when hooking the fish. This goes for the 734 vs 704 question below that as well. You'll be very happy with all the rods you listed, the 735 is my all around everything rod. Jigs, Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, small swimbaits, chatterbaits, the thing does everything. You may prefer some of the techniques I listed to be thrown on the 733 or 734, but that 735 has the ability to do anything when needed. Enjoy! Please feel free to PM me with anymore questions you may have. -David ...and Brian, no worries at all man, I appreciate it. I don't get on here as much as I did before, so these threads pass me by sometimes, always easier to answer PMs! Quote
MSBASSCHAMP Posted March 2, 2011 Author Posted March 2, 2011 well know i dont know which 704 to get mf or f :-? Quote
21farms Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 okay, i've owned more than few dobyns rods and here's my two cents: 704cb-a very light-powered rod. i'd only use this for small cranks in open water or jerkbaits (but even for jerkbaits, i prefer a 6'6" rod) 705cb-if you're just "chuck and wind"-type of crankbait fisherman, the MF glass might be a good option for you as you don't really need to worry too much about setting the hook or losing fish with this rod ;D the F glass is extremely versatile and excellent at all of them. 733/734 over 703/734-yes, the 3 extra inches is super nice. 735-super versatile and, IMHO, the closest to an all-around rod. here's what i'd recommend for you. start with just two rods: 705cb F and the 735, get some feel for what you like/don't like with those and fill in your line-up after that. i think you may discover you don't really need the 704cb. try pitchin', texas-rigging, and light flippin' with the 735 and see what you think. i know a lot of people who buy flippin' sticks and discover flippin' is not for them (including me). note: i'm pretty sure the *** description of the 735c savvy is wrong...it should be medium-heavy, not "mag heavy". i also find the "fast" action of the 734 faster than the "extra fast" of the 735...is that just me? Quote
BassThumb Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 i also find the "fast" action of the 734 faster than the "extra fast" of the 735...is that just me? I think so. The 734 is like a cross between a mod fast and a fast action, IMO. I hear that the 733 is the same deal, but I have not fished with one. I read a quote from Gary Dobyns online where he explains that the 733 and 734 were built with a slightly softer action because they were built to be the more well rounded, multi purpose rods in the Champion line. I personally really like the 734 and 735 and I would recommend them to anybody looking for versatility. Quote
MSBASSCHAMP Posted March 2, 2011 Author Posted March 2, 2011 So the 705 would be a good all around crank bait rod to cover mostly everything ? Quote
BassThumb Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 So the 705 would be a good all around crank bait rod to cover mostly everything ? First off, there are three 705CB cranking sticks. - 705CB Glass (fast) - 705CBMF Glass (mod-fast) - 705CB (mod-fast graphite) I just went through the process of finding a new cranking stick this season. It was not an easy decision because I hadn't handled any Dobyns cranking stick before. Good thing is, there's a lot of writing out there on the subject so Google came in handy, and so did my PMs with David P. I went with the 705CB graphite(mod-fast action) during the recent BTD sale. I haven't fished with it yet but I know I'm going to love it. I was looking for a cranking stick for heavier baits(1/2-3/4oz) like medium to large squarebills, wakebaits, lipless cranks, and jerkbaits. My decision came down to the 705CB glass (fast action) and the 705CB graphite (mod fast action). I ended up choosing the graphite because the main cover in my local waters is weeds, and I want all the sensitivity I can get so I can feel the weedtops and tear the lure free before it fouls, which is a problem I've had with all previous glass cranking sticks I've owned. I did notice that the 705CB fast action glass appears to be one of the most popular rods in the Dobyns line based on how people on the net rave about it. If I were fishing around mainly wood and rock, I probably would have chosen this rod instead. Quote
MSBASSCHAMP Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 now i really dont know what i need ?? i know that i want 2 crankin sticks though but now i dont know if i need the glass or graphite,,, and if i need them in modfast or fast :-? :-/ Quote
