krisjack69 Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I am thinking about putting fireline on my sedona 2500 with a fluorocarbon leader for my dropshot rig.I wanna know what is the best way to go about this and what is the best knot to tie for braid to fluorocarbon. Quote
cwen Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I use a stren know which I believe is a modified uni-knot. I will also use a swivel. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 1, 2011 Super User Posted March 1, 2011 I think this comes up about three times a week. Swivels don't pass through guides very well. This knot does. Alberto Knot: http://www.stripersonline.com/Pages/Articles/article_arby_albertos_knot.shtml Quote
krisjack69 Posted March 1, 2011 Author Posted March 1, 2011 Yeah I saw that knot when I googled.Looks hard to tie tho.Yeah I wish they would upgrade the search feature here.It would be a nice upgrade imo. Quote
Stasher1 Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 If you can't handle that one, the uni-uni is really going to mess you up. Quote
rubba bubba Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 ??? The alberto is an incredibly easy knot to tie. Quote
krisjack69 Posted March 1, 2011 Author Posted March 1, 2011 The knot I use i dont know whats its called but what I do is wrap one end 5 or 6 times and then the other and then thru the loop I believe then tighten if I am not mistaken.I never tied either knots.didnt know about the albright not till recently.I usually tie clinch knot or a PALOMAR KNOT.Albright knot aint easy if u never done it before.I dont connect lines .I just fish main line. It comes up ridiculously often. Quote
John J. Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 If you can't handle that one, the uni-uni is really going to mess you up. The double uni? I never have any problems with this knot. And it is one of my favorite knots to tie leaders with, it's strong and (at least for me) easy to tie. Quote

kLuo Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 came across this article on tackletour (scroll to the bottom of the page): http://www.tackletour.com/reviewpremiumbraidroundup.html tying a uni knot after tying the alberto...interesting, never thought of that. do you guys think this actually would help with the strength of the knot? I feel like it would just make the knot bulkier. Quote
breezy Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I've always used a uni-to-uni knot out laziness. I found it easier to tie than the Alberto/Albright, but I've since learned the uni knot is a real pain when using heavy leaders. This season I will probably be switching over to the Alberto, assuming all goes well. And yeah maybe this should be stickied ;D Quote

krisjack69 Posted March 2, 2011 Author Posted March 2, 2011 one of these days i am going to try the alberto knot.when i get some line that is lol. Quote
Fish Chris Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I use a blood knot. It's kind of a 3 handed knot to tie, but after tying about 9 million of them, they get a little easier Fish BTW, I use a braided mainline, and a fluoro or regular mono leader nearly 100% of the time... So, I tie a LOT of blood knots Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted March 2, 2011 Super User Posted March 2, 2011 I get criticized for this a lot, but I don't believe braid is the best option for a mainline drop shot set-up. (The line floats too easily on slack and is too visible in a clear environment.) I prefer to use 6# test fluoro for the main, with a 4# test fluoro drop for the business end. In between I use a #10 Spro PowerSwivel. Have been using this set-up for a lot of years, with no problems. However, if you are "set" on using braid, then the Albright knot is the way to connect, no doubt. Some of the (better than I) DS fishermen in the northeast tend to agree with me as well. Braid has it's place in fishing. Just not with drop shotting. Again - just my opinion! Please don't scalp me! Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 2, 2011 Super User Posted March 2, 2011 You won't get scalped by me, LOL. I don't use braid with a DS in depths greater than about 10'. I'll use it shotting in weeds, or bubba shotting slop, though in that last case, I don't use a leader at all. I definitely feel more connected using straight fluoro in deep water. Quote
A-Rob Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 braid on the mainline is do-able. Especially if you don't have multiple rods to make 1 only your drop shot rod. I don't mind braid main-line actually b/c of its low maintenance and feel is decent to. But I can't say it is the best set-up, I'm not good enough at drop-shotting. I use a J-knot to attach the 2 lines whenever I'm tying a leader. Variation of a Surgeon's knot. Quote
APK62 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I too use all Fluro when dropshotting,6Lb. I havent tried the barrel swivel yet in my DS setup. Perhaps this year. Andy Quote
