bpNClgmouth Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I've always been a quantum guy so I have no experience with Abu Garcia. I have come across a deal where I can get 50% off some stuff and wanted suggestions on rods. I was looking at the Veritas. Which ones would be best for 1) cranking 2) Jig 3) Frog based on how stiff the blanks are, the taper, etc. thanks Quote
lsufan334 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I love my Veritas. I use the 7'M for cranking. For jigs 3/8 + I use a 7'3" MH/F. For frogs I also use the 7'3" MH/F Quote
dwtaylor Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I came across a similar deal through pure fishing and the problem with some of the veritas rods is that certain lengths and actions are harder to find. I just bought the 7'6" mh rod and had it come within 5 days. My buddy ordered the 7'3" mh in January and it still hasn't arrived. If you watched the Bassmasters Classic, the Fed. Nation Angler Brandon Palanuik was using a veritas rod for crankin. From what I saw, he was using a fast tip rod and he ended up losing a BIG fish within 10 feet from the boat. That fish would've potentially placed him higher. A softer action would have potentially prevented that. I think the 7ft model comes in a mf action, but Im not sure. Either way, the veritas rods have a lot of backbone and are quite stiff for the rating (good for jigs and frogs). Thats why I bought the 7"6" mh rod for flipping. The 7ft heavy rod is a common model and should do quite well for frogs and jigs. If you are talking of the same offer from pure fishing, check out the all star cranking rods. they are really nice for the money and I own two of them. Their actions are just about right. Quote
bpNClgmouth Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 So a pretty good consensus for the 7' M for cranking? Quote

I noticed that also and was surprised to see him using that rod for cranking. It was over 7' so it had to be at least a MH and fast action. I thought the same thing when he lost that fish. I love all my Veritas but until and if they add an actual cranking rod to their line up I will keep using my E21 cranking stick... Quote
WanderLust Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 So a pretty good consensus for the 7' M for cranking? That's what I use 7' M with M or MF action. Quote

21farms Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 for cranking, get the 7-foot medium power, medium-fast action. when i first got it, i thought it may be a little too fast for cranking even though it was rated "medium-fast" but it's been working out great. for jigs, get the 7-foot medium-heavy power, extra fast action. this one would work well for frogs too. i had the 7'3" MH/F but i don't think it is fast enough for these two techniques. krisjack69 Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I would think the Verdict rods would be pretty good cause u can adjust the handle. If u think the handle is to long just make it shorter.pretty kool if it works right.I own a vendetta rod for crankin and other things that I use on my premier and its great. It a mule i tell u.It will wear a bass out or catfish which I found out the other day. breezy Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 IMO the Veritas feels much more powerful than rated. I have a 7' MH I use for jigs and it works great, but it is definitely a really powerful 'medium'-heavy. I think you could also use this for frogs, although if you're fishing heavy cover you may want to look into the heavy rod. For cranks I think the only option would be the 7' M Mod-Fast. I haven't fished this rod but if it's similar to the others I would be concerned about it being too heavy with too fast a tip for cranks. BTW, try and get your hands on a Veritas first if possible. Although I love the sensitivity, balance and weight on mine I find the reel seat very aggravating in colder weather. I actually prefer the BPS Carbonlite rods just because of this, but I would not consider it a deal breaker...especially at 50% off. Quote
