OH-bass614 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Alright guys last year some jackwagon broke into my garage and cleaned out my boat of every setup except for my powell 684cb and a citica which was in my house. So im about to replace my frog rod b.c. im heading to florida the 21st of march and im planning on using it down there. Last year i used a powell 704C with a citica and i loved that rod. this year i have allready bought a curado 200e7 for it but Tackle warehouse is sold out of the 704C so i though about getting the 735 frog rod. What do you guys think about the 735 and what things do you look for in a frog rod. Thanks Quote
dman Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I have heard good things and am thinking about getting one of these. iROD Genesis Series Cast Rod 7'5" Fred's Frog Stick Fred's Frog Stick - Designed by Elite Series Pro and premier frog fisherman, Fred Roumbanis. This rod has the perfect tip to allow accurate casts to precise locations, but it still has enough power to pull them out of the thickest vegetation. http://www.***.com/iROD_Genesis_Series_Casting_Rods/descpage-IRGC.html Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 23, 2011 Super User Posted February 23, 2011 I care more about getting the fish out of the cover I'm fishing, and less about how nice it is to cast a frog. For me, its simple, match the power to the cover. This could mean using something as light as a medium power rod, or as heavy as a punching rod. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted February 23, 2011 Super User Posted February 23, 2011 Nothing for me, though I use an XH/Moderate action rod. No need for a fast tip on a XH rod. Hook them and hoist them from cover. Quote
Fat-G Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 7'3 +, Heavy power, Extra-Fast action. I use that for everything including open-water walking of the frog. PS- Sounds like you need a Mossberg. Quote
Super User flechero Posted February 23, 2011 Super User Posted February 23, 2011 No need for a fast tip on a XH rod. . Amen to that. I have one and it's hard on your shoulders. Quote
MNGeorge Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Longer rod, mine's 7'10", extra heavy, mine's rated 1/2 to 3 ozs., fast action. Tough to cast smaller frogs sometimes, but when I set on a fish, it's head comes up and I can keep him up. Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 7'3" is a good length. Good casting and length to move a fish and the 5 power is a beef stick for heavy cover. Not too long for working the bait tip down. That's the set up I use but in a different brand. Go for it and enjoy your trip !!! Quote

Couldn't ask for a better frog rod than a 735C. I haven't tried a Powell 735, but if it fishes like a Dobyns 735, you'll be happy with it. I look for a rod that's powerful, balanced, and crisp, but not so powerful or so long that it's heavy and cumbersome. A tip that has some play will also help with casting accuracy. Frogging long hours with an overly long broomstick is tiring and will wear you out. Quote
Skeet22 Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I'm using a 7'6 MH 65# braid for frogs b/c I like to really get them out there and cover more water. I have a 7'3" H 65# Braid I use for punching Most of my pitching plastics is done with a 7'3" MH 17# Flouro For Jigs /C-rigs I have a 7'6" MH spooled with 20#flouro All Veritas Someone told me a long time ago on here that I would one day replace all of my 6'6" with 7 footers and I argued that but they were right. Once you get used to fishing with the longer rods you will never go back. I do still have one 6'6" I use for light spinnerbaits. Quote
piscicidal Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Yeah...The 735C has almost the perfect action for frogs, IMO. The rod tip loads to throw light weight spros and horny toads but has enough backbone to pull a big fish out of slop. You just can't get the distance throwing a broomstick. You gotta get the bait out there in that shallow water. Quote
flipin4bass Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I want a 7 1/2 - 8 ft heavy power, xfast or fast action rod to pull em out of the slop. Quote
A-Rob Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 7'0 MH is what I use, great for the moderate junk I fish. It's no California delta. I feel I could go with a longer rod, but can't transport it in my truck anymore. I wouldn't go heavier for my area tho. 7'0 MH is perfect for me. I think Dean Rojas uses a 7'0-7'6" MH rod for most of his frog fishing he said in an article....mind you some MH are heavier than some H actions Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 25, 2011 Super User Posted February 25, 2011 7.5 feetor a little longer; heavy; strong backbone; good casting. Quote
