this year i want to start using the shaky head a lot more. i'm wondering what brand makes the best shaky head. i have a few of the strike kings but i've heard spot removers are good too. so i'm just wondering whats used the most

The spot remover is technically a standup jig, not a shaky head.

In truth, "any" ballhead jig can be used for shaky worming, they're really nothing special.

Far more important than the jighead is the worm you select, which must be a highly buoyant finesse worm (e.g. zipper shakin worm).

RoLo hit the nail on the head.

I think the bait is the most important.

You can go with the football heads, the round heads; the heads with eyes; etc.  Just make sure the bait stands up.

I wil take the shaky head jig and put the bait on it and then put it in the bathtub to see how it stands up.

Pretty cool. Give it a shot and then decide which ones you want to use.

I use two styles of shaky heads, one is a regular one with a baitkeeper barb, and the other has the screw on wire bait holder.

If I'm fishing around a bunch of small fish and spots, I like the screw on type, b/c the bait doesn't get pulled down as much. If I'm around bigger fish, I like the regular style.

My favorite for each type-

Wire screw type- Picasso (pricey :'()

Regular type with barb- Davis original Shaky Head in SL verson (super long shank). You can order them on-line from Coosa Tackle. best buy is the bulk pack of 25 for around $10.

I buy 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 oz size and throw 3/16 most of the time.

ok then thats another question. what worms are bouyant?

The most bouyant worm I have ever seen is the 4" Strike King 3x Finesse Worm

Hot on its heels is the Roboworm 5" Zipper Shakin Worm

Thread either of these worms on ANY jighead and you won't be able to stop them from shaking and waving.

PS: Zoom worms are great worms, but not for shaky worming.

Although zoom calls them floating worms they SINK even without a hook.

Hey utahbasser. I use the spot remover jig head. I have a video demonstration of it in my fish tank, it's uploading now and I'll post it up later.

Cabela's sells unpainted Do-it Mold shakey heads and thats what I use.  I just ordered the mold and I'll be pouring my own.

I have tried 3X and I love the finesse worm's action but they always end up melting in my worm binder and causing a mess.

You're right, they're made of highly reactive plastic that reacts with most other plastic products.

In my den chest I always leave them in their original bags, and in my a worm-proof tackle box I never mix them

with other plastic products. That pretty much solves the reaction issue ;)

I picked up some Arky U-Head finesse jigs to try after Hank Parker recommended them. He said he had no connection with the company but they were the best he had used. the weight is not molded to the hook but is attached to the eye with a thin wire loop. The hook is a long shank offset worm hook.

I also picked up some of these after watching that Hank Parker episode. They look like a pretty cool rig I cant wait to testthem out.

My video on youtube totally disagrees  with the Zoom comment.  The Finesse Worm and trick worm both float their tails.  Another good shaky worm that hasn't been mentioned is the Berkly Power Shaky Worm.  You can find them all over, and they catch fish.  Video of that worm is also up.

I saw that show a couple of weeks ago. It peaked my interest and I plan on give them a whirl this season.

I am a Shakey Head addict, I use it all the time.

I've tried the Spot Removers (stand-up) jig heads and I have not had as much luck with them as I have had the Arkie heads.

I've just picked up someof the other types of heads that I will try out this spring but so far, it's going to be hard to get me off the arkie ball heads.  they just flat out catch fish, i can buy them when I go to wal-mart and they are cheaper than others i've tried.

As for worms Zoom Finesse (watermelon candy).

I have yet to try any of the other finesse or "shakey" worms but I plan to this spring/summer.

But the Arkie ball head with a Zoom Finesse in Watermelon Candy was my number one producer of fish last summer/fall.

I like Zoom and Berkeley's Finesse worms but I also really like Case Plastics' Jack's Worm. It has a tapered tail that makes it quiver in the water.

YouTube???

To compare their buoyancy, just fill your bathroom sink with water, then drop a Zoom Finesse Worm

and a Strike King 3x Finesse Worm into the basin. The Strike King finesse worm will ride high on the surface,

while the zoom finesse worm will lie flat on the bottom (ditto the zoom trick worm)!

It takes more weight to sink the strike king 3x finesse worm than any worm I ever tested.

Though I mentioned the Berkley Powerbait Shaky Worm on another thread (Luke Clausen),

its buoyancy is far behind the Strike King Finesse worm (4" & 7") and the 5" Zipper Shakin worm.

Plus, they smell like an open sardine can :;) :-/

I use the Reaction Innovations "Screwed up" jig head, spot remover jig heads and the generic "renegade" brand from walmart for shaky rigs.

I like the idea about using floating worms, and have had a little success with then, but you can use almost anything plastic on it. I have had the most success with smaller craw type baits and 4" senkos.

my favorite craw for this is a 2.5" RocKraw by JDC Bait company.

I'm sorry, I thought you were saying that the Zoom stuff doesn't float, not comparing it to the 3X stuff.  I haven't tried the 3X worms yet, but if they're anything  like the craws, then I agree.

Zoom

3X craw
