Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted February 21, 2011 Super User Posted February 21, 2011 So I'm finally shelling out some money on a new reel. Going to the BPS spring classic so as not to break the bank on one. I want to stay spend no more than 200 dollars. Currently I'm torn between the Quantum Pt Smoke and one of the Revo reels. Y'all got any input or suggestions for me? Quote
SausageFingers23 Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Personally, I'm a Revo guy. I love them. The SX is a workhorse and is great to fish. I don't have any experience with the Quantum line. You might want to consider the Pro Quailifier. Its a solid reel, comes in a number of different gear ratios, and runs about $100. You could grab two or save some and pick up other things that you need/want. Quote
adclem Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I would go with the Revos STX or Revo SX or even the Patriarch. The Curados are also an excellent choice to consider. Later, Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted February 21, 2011 Super User Posted February 21, 2011 Advantage HSTA or SHIMANO Curado Quote
WanderLust Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Advantage HSTA or SHIMANO Curado ^^^ Excellent choices. Just added a Curado 51E to my collection. My fishing partner has the Advantage... Extremely nice forn the money. Quote
bwell Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 You cant go wrong with the Revo STX... Its by far my favorite reel. Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 IMHO, you cant go wrong with any reel over $150...they are all quality reels and it comes down to personal preference. Now, after saying that, get the Pflueger President...its teh best ;D ;D ;D Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 21, 2011 Super User Posted February 21, 2011 Y'all got any input or suggestions for me? Hmmmm...........being a raiders fan, there is not too much I can say that will make sense to you, brain damage of that magnitude is irreversible. Quote
Quitlimpin Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Have been an Abu Garcia guy all my life. Took the shimano plunge last summer and picked up an e7. Long story short...all but one sx have been sold/traded for curados. IMHO, it's a no brainer---curado owns the $200 & under reels Quote
shimanogloomis man Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Advantage HSTA or SHIMANO Curado im a shimano guy obviousy ;D and my twin bro is a diawa guy so he has a hsta and i have a e7 while the diawas is a little smother i preferred the e7 let me tell you why 1st its lighter, casts better casting and pitching, fits in my hand better, drags stronger and im a big fan of the larger knobs hope this helps Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted February 22, 2011 Author Super User Posted February 22, 2011 Wow a raider hater on the site. Who'd have thought. Anyway. Never put much thought to Shimanos reels. I've personally always fished Okumas. I'm just not real big on their new higher end reels. After all through talk about the Shimanos reels, I might have to try one. However she who must be obeyed has given me permission to spend another hundred and fifty so my limit is now 350. Would that be overkill on a reel or should I stay in the 200 range. Quote

That puts you in range for a ton of sick reels however $200 will get you a great reel. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted February 22, 2011 Super User Posted February 22, 2011 for $350 get a Daiwa Zillion, or SHIMANO Core, and blow the rest on tackle. Quote
BassThumb Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 In my opinion, there's no need to spend $350 on a single reel. You can get two Shimano Curados or Revo STXs for less than that on eBay from retailers with the Buy It Now option. These two reels will not hold you back whatsoever, and I believe you'll catch more fish with two very good combos than you will with one great combo. There's an online flea market that has a brand new 2009 Revo STX-HS on sale right now for $140. I'll PM you with details. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted February 22, 2011 Super User Posted February 22, 2011 What are your intentions for this reel? Plastics and jigs? Cranks? Topwater? Spinnerbaits? Quote
central.PA.bass Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 nothin' better than a good which reel is better than the other thread... REVO STX Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted February 22, 2011 Author Super User Posted February 22, 2011 What are your intentions for this reel? Plastics and jigs? Cranks? Topwater? Spinnerbaits? Im going to say mostly cranks. If it will do cranks and top waters that would be a huge plus. Still mostly if not all cranks. Quote

Probably one of the best crankbait reels around especially for the price. Quote
bwell Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 If you are going to be using it for cranks then I would either get the Revo winch or the Shimano curado e5... I haven't used either of them but from the reviews from others the curado is the way to go for a low gear ratio casting reel. I will be looking into getting a curado e5 next month. Quote
B A S S E R Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 You can buy 3 Pro Qualifiers's at the classic for a little over $200 if you do the reel trade in. They are on sale for $80 a piece and you get $10 off each one when you trade in. They are awesome reels and come in 4 different gear ratios. Quote

I have a Curado 201E7 and a Revo Winch. If Shimano would have made a 201E5 I would have that as well. Instead I have the 51E which is a great light bait reel. Quote
bpNClgmouth Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Just got my Quantum Smoke 7:0:1 and paired it with the new Powell Endurance 723....couldn't be happier Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Of the reels you asked about I would go with the Quantum Smoke with the Abu being my second choice. Get a feel for the reel on a comparable rod and read some of the reviews. Quote
