Nashua Nev Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 Just received 2 new diawa goldcast spincasters. (for the kids for christmas) the kids love to catch big pickerel We fish lots of rocky areas and stumpy area and lots of weeds later in the season. I am on the hunt for my first 7 lb largemouth (gotta wish big here in NH) I also have 2 new Pflueger spinning reels (from the wife for christmas) what do you guys think as the best overall lines (anybrand) for the 2 different types of reels. (i typically fish 10 - 12 lb test) longest cast line for each type? least problematic for each type? Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 19, 2011 Super User Posted February 19, 2011 personally would go with 6lb yozuri ultrasoft on the spinning reels. The spincast I would either go with the same thing or go up to 10lb if you wanted a little stronger line. Quote
WanderLust Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 Spincasters have limited line options. I would use Trilene XT or Suffix Elite with a tieable steel wire leader if pike fishing. 2 spinning reels really depends on what you are using them for... general purpose - Trilene XT or Suffix Elite mono or Stren drop shot - 8# Yo-Zuri ultrasoft or Seagaur InvisX need higher strength or sensitivity I would use braid and an appropriate leader. I like Daiwa Samurai but Power pro, Spiderline, Fireline would all work. Braid is low memory and can cast a mile... Quote
Fish Chris Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Spincasters..... Wow. I have no idea. I've never owned one. Spinning reels.... braided spectra. I prefer Tuf-Line XP. But just as long as it's braid, it's all good. Rubberband (mono) is for newspapers and golf balls Fish Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted February 21, 2011 Super User Posted February 21, 2011 braid with a fluorocarbon leader so the rocks dont eat it up. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted February 21, 2011 Super User Posted February 21, 2011 Braid on a spincaster? That's a recipe for distaster. Line pickup probably wouldn't last a week. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 21, 2011 Super User Posted February 21, 2011 Yo-Zuri Hybrid or Hybrid Ultra Soft #6, ~11.9 lb breaking strength. 8-) Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted February 21, 2011 Super User Posted February 21, 2011 Braid on a spincaster? That's a recipe for distaster. Line pickup probably wouldn't last a week. Braid actually works quite well. Ive used spincasters and underspin reels with PP for years. The biggest issue was "new" braid the coating would be left on the line pick-up and need cleaning. Once the coating had worn a bit just fine plus I sprayed a bit of reelmagic on and then it worked great. I had an older Daiwa goldcast spincaster oh 5yrs used PP on that but needed a little weight like 1/4oz or so to cast well . It wouldnt throw 1/16oz jigs. The Daiwa goldcast underspin I have the spring for the pin wears not the pin itseft this over like 2 seasons of use. This isnt a line issue but a reel quality issue. I have a Pflueger 1806 underspin that I feel is much better than the goldcast in durability and not becoming "loose" as the goldcast has. The pins close and stay closed this after 4yrs. The zebco33 spincast braid is fine. The the spring in that wears as well needing to be tighened a bit so pins dont stick out catching the line on a toss this happen with Trilene XL as well so not a line issue. AND I got my son an UL uglystik combo with underspin and put braid on that it works fine. None of the pins on any of these reels have been worn by braid I woulnt go back to mono at all. I actually did try for abot 1 week and the memory line twists #8 XL were awful ripped it off and put PP back on. I use either 8/1 or 10/2 on these reels. Quote
Fish Chris Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Just out of curiosity, do Spincast reels even have a drag system ? As I said, I've never owned one.... But I have been handed one on a couple of occasions, and I remember the first thing I did (which is always the first thing I do, whenever anyone hands me any rod / reel combo) was to grab the line in front of the reel and pull.... I remember 1 or 2 not slipping at all, and another 1 or 2 feeling like I was stripping the gears ! Doh ! {I don't think this is going to land a Sturgeon there buddy LOL} Fish Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 21, 2011 Super User Posted February 21, 2011 The Daiwa Goldcast is unique in that its basically a non counter weighted spinning reel. It has a drag, oscillating spool, and a line roller. It works fine with braid. Its really nothing like a Zebco. A nice reel for kids or guests that don't often fish. Quote
