T.R. Express Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 I'm an Abu guy and thinking about a Pflueger Patriarch XT Casting Reel . Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Quote
Buzbait88 Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 I've used the patriarchs since they came out and they are sweet! Much smoother than the curado and much smoother and better built than the cheaper abu garcias. I haven't used the SXT model, it might be different since they are more evenly priced. But the patriarch is 1 awesome reel! Would like to upgrade all of mine to patriarchs this year. The XT is just a lighter version than last year. I know they added a carbon fiber handle for sure, but not sure of what else they changed. Quote
soccplayer07 Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 i have the original patriarch and a few stx's. I think the stx is far superior. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted January 7, 2010 Super User Posted January 7, 2010 I've got two of the older ones and love them. It's not a reel that I would want to pay $200 for but I've not payed retail for a reel yet, I got them on eBay before they got widely recognized at a great discount, that makes them even better. I'm not big on the color or price of the XT but I'm sure it's a great reel. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 7, 2010 Super User Posted January 7, 2010 imho the pflueger patriarch is the best casting reel made.the xt can only be better. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted January 7, 2010 Super User Posted January 7, 2010 The only advantage I can see over a standard Patriarch is weight but an LP Patriarch is only 8oz to begin with so I'm not sure how much lighter you need to get. You lose a bearing in the XT's vs the Patriarch but you gain a standard handle nut style attached crank handle ... if that's really important. Not sure I see the added value of the XT over a standard Patriarch which is one outstanding reel. Quote
T.R. Express Posted January 7, 2010 Author Posted January 7, 2010 Great input fellas! As a Revo Premier guy it's hard to break the mold. I bought a Quantum PT Tour last season and compared it to my Abu Skeet Reese. It's like going from a 20hp outboard back to a 9.9. I just want to keep that Abu Skeet feeling going, it brought me mucho confidence and a fantastic season! I'm hoping a Pat XT on a 705 Dobyns glass will continue that feeling! Quote
Choke Canyon Boy Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 I have a revo premier and a stx and a quantum tour however every time I go to Academy and handle the Patriarch I am throughly impressed with the quality and smoothness. I would definately try one out and might in the future. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 8, 2010 Super User Posted January 8, 2010 newest patriarch has the nut style.i liked the old handle. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted January 8, 2010 Super User Posted January 8, 2010 LH selection would be nice. They just came out with a LH versiion of the regular patriarch....sheesh.....Give 'em some time, I'm sure it'll take another year to get a LH XT and by then they'll have a new top of the line for us righties : Quote
SWMIBASSER Posted January 8, 2010 Posted January 8, 2010 newest patriarch has the nut style.i liked the old handle. The old handle did look nice but I'll bet it seems like an obscure design to alot of guys. They were heavier than a conventional handle and I'll bet that is the driving factor in getting away from that design. By having a conventional bolt on handle if you should ever need to change the handle down the road, there will be tons of options, vs almost none. I still like those reels. I'd be happy with a regular patriarch but really want one of the new XT's Quote
T.R. Express Posted January 8, 2010 Author Posted January 8, 2010 When it comes to handles it is important for field mods. Case in point I have a Abu Revo Skeet Reese that the knob handle bent. Abu used aluminum hardware to attach to handle, very easy to bend on hook sets and reelin in lunkers. Quote
T.R. Express Posted January 17, 2010 Author Posted January 17, 2010 Ordered the Pat XT today, will be in at the end of the month. Going to put it on a Dobyns 7'MH 705 CB Glass. I plan to set hooks like Peter Thliveros, when he does it sounds like he's hoisting V8 engines with rope, block & tackle... 8-) Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 18, 2010 Super User Posted January 18, 2010 good choice.make sure you oil it a little first.i do this with all reels. Quote

They've been selling there at Buy it now for $225 shipping included. Quote
Big Al23 Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 The XT is basically the same reel as a Premier. They come out of the same Korean factory along with the new Team Lews and Lews Tournament Pro. Cosmetics are the differences. Quote
northern basser Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I have a patriarch xt and I think it is a excellent reel! It's solid and smooth. The blue would look cool on some rods, but otherwise the color is odd. I care far more about performance than looks though. The coating on the reel is bulletproof. It would take a lot to scratch it. Generally speaking, I use shimano reels and love them. I would, however, recommend the pat. xt to anyone!! Quote

Smooth as butter! Been looking at the Patriarch for a while too - diehard Shimano guy here as well, but I might take a look at the XT when I get a chance. Looks solid! Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted February 15, 2011 Super User Posted February 15, 2011 I love my XT but wish they had a widespool version, pflueger seems to be about a year behind on this stuff. Quote
Stasher1 Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I love my XT but wish they had a widespool version, pflueger seems to be about a year behind on this stuff. Or a 7:1 version. > That's the only thing that keeps me from buying one. I prefer the Patriarch over the Curado, but I'm actually looking at ordering another Curado because I can't get a Patriarch XT in the ratio I prefer. Quote

Just curious, what about the Patriarch do you prefer over the Curado? Quote
21farms Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Just curious, what about the Patriarch do you prefer over the Curado? heh, for me, it'd be because the patriarch XT is blue and would match the blue on my dobyns rods. i love my curados but that green color looks putrid on my dobyns'. i do prefer either a 7:1 or 5:1 gear ratio...6:1 is just too much of a compromise for me. i personally don't care for the way pflueger spools are tapered...can't get the line packed down as much on 'em. Quote
northern basser Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 If the xt came in 7:1 I would have a couple more! I'm not a huge fan of the EVA grips/knobs either, but I'll put up w/ them because the reel is that good. Quote
Stasher1 Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Just curious, what about the Patriarch do you prefer over the Curado? To be honest, I don't think there's a nickel's worth of difference between the two when it comes to performance. They both cast light lures well and the drags are sufficient for most freshwater fish I'm likely to come across around here, but the Patriarch palms better for me, it's smoother, has a more durable finish, and I think it's better looking. I prefer the Curado's knobs over the small ones on the standard Patriarch, though. The EVA ones on the XT are the same as the ones on the Supreme XT, and they're not very comfortable in my hand. They feel like little sanding blocks. :-/ Quote
