big fish lure?

when you are fishing a lake and want to catch the biggest fish in the lake, what lures do you throw? and do you think the " bigger bait, bigger fish" theory is true. i plan to throw some bigger baits than i did last year

i do'nt like fishing deep divers either. i would rather drop a worm or jig down deep.

jigs do pretty well for big fish, just ask hawg caller!

but its not all about the bait, locating the fish is probably harder than catching it. but thats not what you asked, so i dont want to go into that.

jigs, and large plastics (10" worms, etc) catch some monsters.

I find a place that has numbers of decent fish and hit with your big fish lures. Jigs, Chatterbait styled baits, and swimbaits all work for me. Last year I decided to fish for bigger fish and did that to catch 7 trophys with many under 22 inches when I hadnt caught any that big previously.

For freshwater bass a jig is my choice for targeting more quality fish. As for "Bigger the bait, the bigger the fish" I couldn't tell you if that applies to freshwater bass, but it definetly applies to fluke.

Try to find Briery Creek in Virginia via Google and see what baits they are using to catch those monster bass.

I have heard that a 10-inch worm is dynamite.

I am sure the Briery Creek guys can help you if you can find a good site where they post their informtation or there are some good articles.

As for "Bigger the bait, the bigger the fish" I couldn't tell you if that applies to freshwater bass, but it definetly applies to fluke.

I'm really starting to think the whole big baits=big bass theory is bs, around here anyway.

A 3/4 oz Jig with an extra skirt tied on with a 9" Uncle Josh Black Widow Eel". This bait is 12" long and looks like a bass should be afraid of it. My top 3 PB bass were caught on it and several that were shorter than the bait. LOL

ronnie, that is one interesting lure. i may just have to try something similar to that, except with a 10" culprit as a trailer cuz i have no idea what a black widow eel is. :-?

They are pork skin like most Uncle Josh trailers. You have to see them in the water hooked up to that big hairy jig. Makes me want to eat one.

My PB was caught in a farm pond in Amite La. on May 18th. I tossed it against a bluff bank in about 8-10' of water. She nailed it as soon as it hit the water. She carried it 1/2 way across the pond before I set the hook. She held on a long time is another reason I like this bait.

PB #2 was in a cove on my local lake (the fish is in my avatar) 85 degrees in August, bluebird sky almost noon. Fished it real slowly in some submerged logs like a plastic worm. I felt her bump it gently and set the hook.

PB#3 was under a bridge in the Tangipahoa river in Robert La. in August about 90 degrees and cloudy. Dead sticking for 30 seconds at a time. Hopped it a couple of inches and wham a viscious strike.

I am not sure it won't work anywhere, any time.

i mainly fish for the bigguns .... i use 3 baits when i want a biggun .... 1st is the jig n pig ,, i like 1/2-3/4 jigs for this ....2nd would be a swimbait ....  next would be the spro frog depending on season and avibale cover ....  this is how i catch the majority of big bass through out the year ....

Many baits will catch big fish. Your best shot at catching larger fish is to use whatever lure is producing the most and focus on structure/depths that will attract these fish. Worry more about where to find the big fish rather than looking for a magic hawg-catchin lure.

the biggest smallmouth i've caught was on a dropshot... but i got a few big topwater baits and some new swimbaits to catch the hogs.

My favorite big bass lure would have to be the jig n' pig. Under the right conditions. jigs will produce both quanity and quality.

I do not think that the big bass/big bait theory has much merit.  Obviously as you increase the size of your lure, the average size of the bass you catch increases, and your catch rate decreases. However, I am not convinced that smaller lures won't catch as many big bass as larger lures will. One of my favorite finesse lures is a wacky rigged 3" senko. I have caught bass from 4" to 8lbs (my PB) on that tiny worm.

I have caught the majority of my quality fish on either a jig or a large worm.  However, I must admit that these are the baits I primarily throw.  To date my largest fish was caught on a rattle trap.
