GoVikes Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I am looking for a new plastics rod. Thinking of a St Croix Avid 6'8 M XF. Any other suggestions to consider at this price point (around $170)? Is an Avid that much better than a Shimano Compre? Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 11, 2011 Super User Posted February 11, 2011 easy pick there, dobyns savvy Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 11, 2011 Super User Posted February 11, 2011 I have that rod. In light to medium cover, it should be fine. Pair it with a light weight reel. Quote

Super User deep Posted February 11, 2011 Super User Posted February 11, 2011 No one definite right answer here. I use and will recommend a Powell Max M/XF. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 11, 2011 Super User Posted February 11, 2011 Hands down, the Avid is better than the Compre, not that the Compre is a bad rod, just the Avid IMHO is the next step up. For JUST fishing plastics............I would lean more towards, in a St Croix, any rod from that 6'8" M/XF up to the 7' MH/F, depending on cover/line choice/etc.... I have been itching to get a 6'8" M/XF myself, I love it the spinning version I have (Mojo), it's the most versitile spinning rod I have, I can't help but think the casting would as well. Quote
WanderLust Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Avid is a great rod so you really can't go wrong. Quote
Hot n Tot Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I use spinning at lot for soft plastics, and Avids are becoming favorite spinning rods. I'd actually have this rod in a Legend Tournament series. Very nice rod indeed. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted February 11, 2011 Super User Posted February 11, 2011 After messing around with Avids, Crucials and other comparable rods, I've gone the Dobyns route. In that price range I don't think you can beat a Savvy. A 3 power would probably fit the bill for you. A 703 or 733 would work great. That Avid you're looking at is a great stick. No doubt about it. If you're able, I'd definitely see if you have a place or a person locally so you can compare the rods to each other. Find which one fits you're hands the best. Quote

jamarkwe Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 you cant go wrong with any rod in that price range. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted February 12, 2011 Super User Posted February 12, 2011 st.croix rods will be around long after these new comers have come and gone.lifetime warranty is only good if the company still exists. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted February 12, 2011 Super User Posted February 12, 2011 Crucials are pretty good rods, and you really can't beat the lifetime over the counter exchange warranty, (If your store participates) Quote
BassThumb Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Which Dobyns Savvy would you recommend? SS703C Go check out Capra's in Blaine. As of a week ago they had a 30% off sale of Dobyns rods and the 703SS was in stock. I was playing around with the Dobyns Savvy series rods for the first time, dragging the rod tips across the carpet as a quick way to gauge sensitivity. They feel like very nice rods for the price, about as good as St. Croix Avids, which are excellent rods. Quote
