dulouz Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I have upgraded a couple of my reels this winter and I am wondering if I should keep the old ones. I have a couple of the cheaper pflueger baitcasters (1 Purist, and 1 Echelon). I don't know if it would be worth the trouble to sell them since I probably wouldn't get much for them. I suppose it would be good to have a couple of spares in my tacklebox. What do you guys do with your old reels if you don't sell them? Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted February 10, 2011 Super User Posted February 10, 2011 If they're not worth it to you to sell them, and they're in good working condition, donate them to Cast For Kids. http://www.castforkids.org/ Otherwise, store them somewhere to use for a guest or as a backup reel. Never hurts to have a few spares. Quote
Hot Rod Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I have at least one rigged up on an old rod all the time for practicing pichin/flippin in the "off season" when I can't get out. This helped me learn to cast with either hand without wasting precious time on the water, not to mention helped my accuracy. I'll have one on an old flippin stick for use outside and one on a 5'6" rod I can practice with inside the house without hitting the ceiling. The others I keep as back-ups or pass them on to my kids. I used to buy all different brands but now I try to stick with same brand and model if possible. That way I can scrap parts off an old one to keep another one working. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted February 10, 2011 Super User Posted February 10, 2011 Designate is as your "Car Trunk" reel, just pair it with a nice 2 piece rod. Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Upgrade these reels. Pfluegar makes some pretty decent stuff. About 30 dollars a reel and some do it yourself work and these reels will perform with the + $100 reels. Quote
piscicidal Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 If it's a reel I have no interest in using anymore, I either give it to a neighborhood kid or bring it in to Bass Pro Shops when they have their annual trade-in sale. If it's a good quality reel, I'll replace parts as needed to keep it in the rotation... Quote
Super User bassfisherjk Posted February 10, 2011 Super User Posted February 10, 2011 Give them to the Boy Scouts or something like that. Quote

Super User eyedabassman Posted February 11, 2011 Super User Posted February 11, 2011 I think it is just on a reel and not a combo. Call your Bass Pro and ask them. Quote

And I dont know if this effects you or not but I believe you can use the coupon on any reel except shimanos. Quote
ROCbass Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Nope, wasn't planning on getting a Shimano. I wanted to get a carbonlite, and a new crankbait rod for my curado E5. My original plan was to use the trade in coupon on a carbonlite, then get a crankin' stick, but then I saw that the carbonlite combos were $180 bucks, and they have a 7' medium moderate carbonlite rod. At this price, the combo would have been cheaper than the carbonlite and crankin stick together, but I'm not sure now which will be the better deal once the coupon is factored in if it can't be used on a combo. RicVA Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Neighborhood kids, Big Brothers association. I would have loved to have a reel given to me as a youngster. Quote
TennesseeShad Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 If the parts are usable in another reel I usually hang on to them and if I just don't want them anymore I give them away. Quote
collegefishing12 Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 2 good options. (1) Hang on to the reels until Bass Pro's classic special where they give you money (i think like $25) towards a new reel with the donation of an old reel; or (2) just DONATE IT!! I remember as a youngster I had a Zebco 303 with a broken thumb release and 5 year old fishing line... thought I was the luckiest kid in the world Quote
