JKarbo214 Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Hey everyone, I need some feedback on some rod and reel combinations. I am planning to purchase a casting rod and reel and a spinning rod and reel. I have certain circumstances I am under and therefore have chosen very specific rods and reels and was hoping for any feedback on any of the rods and/or reels I plan on buying. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated: W&M Skeet Reese Casting Rod WMESRCB70C1 S-Glass Crankbait Rod, 7'0" 1/4-3/4 oz. 10-20 lb. line Medium fast with Garcia Revo S Casting Reel 9 Brgs 6.4:1 8.6 oz. Powell Spinning Rod 703MEF 7 ft. Medium Extra Fast with Shimano Sahara D Series SH-2500FD 3 BB/1 RB 6.2:1 35 IPC 9.9 oz. Any feedback whatsoever greatly appreciated. Thanks! Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 That is some good rod and reels...especially the Powell, but it would help if we knew what these "certain circumstances" were, or at least what these will be used for Quote
central.PA.bass Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 the spinning combo is going to be great! I own a powell 703 and love it.. the sahara is made by shimano so its going to be a great reel... as for the casting, I own a 8ft flippin stick from W&M.. I like it.. I don't love it.. I will probably never own another Skeet rod... But I have a friend who has the S Glass rod you are talking about and he likes it.. And the revo s is a great reel! good choice on that one! Good Luck! Whets Lines Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I can not comment on the feel or fishability of the W & M rod. However, I can comment on the one my cousin bought which I recently took back to BPS for a trade. The quality on this thing was way below what I would expect for a rod in this price range. He had the 7'10" rod and handle was as big as a broom handle. I didn't like that one bit. After further inspection, at least 4 of the eyes on this rod were not level and were not in a complete straight line down the blank (one eye was off center just a bit). The eyes were not bent, they were just put on sloppily. Maybe I'm being too picky after a few years of using St. Croix rods, but I wouldn't pay any money for one of those rods. There are better quality rods out there in that price range. St. Croix offers a couple. For what it is worth, I saw this same kind of slack craftsmanship on TFO rods I checked out at Cabela's too. I'm sure you could get a better quality rod by looking into something like a St. Croix Mojo, Lamiglas, All Star, or many others I have not spent a lot of time checking out. I do like the choices of reels you have made though. Whets 8-) Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 11, 2011 Global Moderator Posted February 11, 2011 I have that exact W&M cranking rod and I like it really well so far. I've had it for about 6 months so I can't talk much for durability but it can really wing a crankbait out there quite a ways and is really good at keeping them buttoned once they hit. I've fished a lot of crankbaits since I've had the rod and other than the color I don't have anything bad to say about it. I also have 2 Revo S reels. I have one I got when they first came out and the bearing that makes the levelwind track stopped working so I have to get that replaced. The other one I got from JimmyMo3287 and it has been working great for tossing spinnerbaits and cranking in fish! ;D Quote
Super User deep Posted February 11, 2011 Super User Posted February 11, 2011 Just echoing other members here. That Powell/ Shimano will make one sick spinning set-up. I love mine. For crankbaits though, maybe you could look for a longer rod. Like 7'6" or longer? Quote
central.PA.bass Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 The other one I got from JimmyMo3287 and it has been working great for tossing spinnerbaits and cranking in fish! ;D Great to hear you are putting it to good use! I havent even put any line on mine yet! The lakes up here in Pennsylvania haven't even considered thawing yet.. wind chill has been around -10 the last few days.. its supposed to get up to 40 next week so hopefully it'll start opening up the lakes!! If it wasn't for powerplant lakes around here, I'd be in the same boat! I've only got to use that reel once so far but I caught several largemouth, whitebass, and my first smallmouth of the year tossing a War Eagle finesse spinnerbait on it. It casts great and I can actually fish my bait right with the right handed retrieve! Quote

Mine is paired with a Shimano Symetre. Quote
