gatogordo Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I have Cabelas points I want to use and I am looking at Cabelas for a 7' M/H M/F tip. Want to here everybodies opinion of what the best rod I can buy for med/large crankbaiting. Thanks Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 The Cabelas Prodigy PDC705-1 fits as it is a 7' MH/MF 1/4-1oz lure weight rod and in your price range. The Abu Garcia Veritas VRC70-5 may fit also at 7' but it is an M/MF. Check on the site and do a price range check and then pick out rods you might like and compare them as there are many that will suit your need. I have the Cabelas Prodigy paired with a Prodigy reel for the same purpose. Quote
gatogordo Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Thanks. I have looked at Cabelas and there a few that can fit. Before I decide I wanted to hear from those who have crank rods. It will be paired with a 6600 BCX @ 5.3-1. I am going to Mexico and it will have a 3" fat Free Shad hooked to it. I will also use it back home for med crankbaits. Chicity, how is the weight of the prodigy? Quote
WanderLust Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Do you need to buy a Cabelas rod? If not Abu Garcia Vendetta Cast Rod 7'3" MH would work well in that catergory and its $89. Quote
gatogordo Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 No I dont have to have a Cabelas rod. It just has to be from Cabelas. Quote

The Rooster Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Don't count out the Shimano Compre cranking rods. Sell for $100 in 6'6" lengths, and only $110 for 7'. Quote

northern basser Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I haven't used a prodigy yet but the cabelas XML rods are awesome. The store by me still has some of the left over clearance rods for $59. They have a new XML coming out this year, but I think the blank is the same w/ different paint job. I was just there and saw the new prodigy micro guide rods. They looked pretty tempting. They're the same price as the reg. ones too I think,$99. Quote

I have 4 of the XML rods and they are great rods but I like the split grip and the new models don't have the split grip if I remember correctly. Waiting on the Hammond, IN store to get the new prodigy micro guide rods in so I can take a look at them. I'm leaning towards adding one to my collection for this year after getting my hands on one. Yes they are the $99 also. Quote

The xmls I would have to say are more sensitive but they are the for different techninques than my prodigy. I have a couple of the Rig & Jig model xml rods and a ML used for finesse techniques. The prodigy I have is one of my crankbait setups. It performs well in respect to that technique. Quote
gatogordo Posted February 8, 2011 Author Posted February 8, 2011 Anyone have or try the Fenwick HMG series? Quote
Vinny Chase Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Anyone have or try the Fenwick HMG series? I have three of them, and there is a reason I continue to go back and buy more. They handle like a $200 rod. The sensitivity, quality, and feeling of the rod is amazing. Not to mention, the customer service is great at Fenwick I would also take a look at the MagTouch rods. They also have great sensitivity, and you can't beet the Cabelas warranty. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I have a Mag Touch that I use as a spinnerbait rod and just picked up a Mag Touch dropshot rod and they are great rods. Very sensitive but some people don't like the rod grip but I haven't had a problem with it slipping out of my hand at all even when its wet. Quote

That was Tuesday. Today i was looking online and the prodigy was $59.99. I called back and Cabelas gift carded me $40 bucks. So the prodigy is now $59.99. ;D Quote

I paid that amount for my spinning model a couple months ago and glad they gave you the new sale price. They also have the new Prodigy Micro rods on sale for $79.99 and its very tempting to pull the trigger on it. Quote
