kaljr82 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I am pretty new to fishing, and am in the process up upgrading my rods and reels. I found a great deal in this reel: QUANTUM ENERGY E40PTi-A SPINNING REEL, but some things I have read say this particular model is too big for bass fishing. I live in Wisconsin and fish mostly for bass and walleye. Would this reel be too big if spooled with 10lb line? Quote
kaljr82 Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 BTW I was planning to put this on 6'9" M/XF Mojo Bass Rod. Quote
Stasher1 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Way too large and heavy for any rod I own, and too heavy for the Mojo you're looking at as well...especially since it's a ML/XF dropshot rod. If you can find the same reel in the 20 size, it might not be a bad choice. Quote
kaljr82 Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 thanks! until this point I have never paid attention to Rod and Reel sizes. Just bought Combos I could afford. So yes, I am very much a newb! Quote
Stasher1 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 They (St. Croix) offer a very similar but heavier-powered rod in their Mojo lineup, the 6'8" M/XF. It's marketed as a "wacky rig" rod, but it's really suitable for most soft plastics and lighter finesse jigs. I wouldn't want to toss crankbaits with it, but it will handle just about anything else just fine. If you really feel that 10 lb line is necessary for the waters you fish, I'd probably opt for something a like a MH, though. Quote
kaljr82 Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Maybe I will ask this question then. Any suggestions on setups I should be using? As I said I will be fishing mostly bass and welleye. I am looking to buy two rod/reel setups for now with a budget of around $300 total. I realize that is pretty cheap but I am just starting out. I am also going to canada in May with a friend to fish for Small Mouth/Walleye and Pike. thanks again for all the help! Quote
Stasher1 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Two of these while they're on clearance: http://www.basspro.com/Pflueger-Supreme-XT-Spinning-Reels/product/98349/-1450589?cm_sp=PfluegerSupremeXTFeb2011_HM And a couple of these in the length/power/action of your choosing (perhaps a 7' M and a 7' ML for finesse lures?): http://www.basspro.com/St--Croix-Triumph-Series-Spinning-Rods/product/103653/-1284081 The rod is built on the same blank as the Mojo, in the same factory, and comes with the same warranty. It's just not as flashy. Quote
kaljr82 Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 both with 8 lb line? or one 8 and one 6? Quote

I will do that!! Thanks man! Again, I apologize if i sound like a newb. I am just learning and will take all the help I can get. Quote
kaljr82 Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 I feel like I have learned a lot already. I will probably go ahead and get the Quantum Reel mentioned in the Subject and put it in a Medium Heavy Quantum Rod and use that for Pike and larger fish and I will probably then look over the suggestions here and decide what to get. anybody have any experience with the St. Croix Spinning reels? Super User roadwarrior Posted February 7, 2011 Super User Posted February 7, 2011 This is my take: I buy things that will last for years, maybe a decade or more. This is how you "build" an arsenal. I suggest buying just one rig of better quality this year. With a little patience and shopping you can find this combination within your budget. Shimano Stradic CI4 (retail $200, maybe $150) St. Croix Avid AVS68MXF ($180, maybe $125) A CI4 may be offered soon on our Flea Market, another model Avid was offered recently for $105. This is doable for less than $300. 8-) Quote

Don't get stuck on Quantum or even on pairing brand-x rod with brand-x reel (all brands are compatible). There is so much advertising, sponsorships, endorsements, eye candy, etc. in fishing rods and reels it can be confusing for anyone, not to mention someone relatively new to fishing. Maybe before spending $300 just wait a little, browse some forums (like this one), look for sales... it won't hurt. I think the St. Croix spinning reels are made by Daiwa. Probably better choices. ChiCityBasser Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 The Quantum PTi-A series of spinning reels is considered to be heavy compared to other reels. I have a Catalyst PTi-A (grey model) which weighs 11.8oz and a PTi-B (burnt orange model) which weighs 10.4oz. The PTi-B is a smoother reel but of course the A models can be found on ebay and clearance from some places at great prices. Both are great reels though and I haven't had any problems. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted February 8, 2011 Super User Posted February 8, 2011 Well, I don't remember who actually makes the reel, but it's not St. Croix. 8-) Quote
kaljr82 Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 So after doing to researching I ended up ordering two of the Pflueger Supreme XT Spinning Reels that Bass Pro had on sale for $69.88 before they sold out. I ordered two Quantum 2piece Rods for my trip to Canada and am looking at getting two St. Croix Triumph 1 pc rods in about a month. Thanks for all of the help everyone! Quote
