zelmo Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 I want a rod for small to medium crankbaits and I am trying to decide between the Avid AVC70MM or the Loomis CBR843C. Has anyone used both? It seems the Avid should be a little softer since the Loomis has a moderate fast taper and the Avid is moderate. How do they compare when on the water? Rod will be paired with a Steez. Quote
WanderLust Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 I've never fished that Loomis Rod but the Avid is solid. I perfer a moderate taper for cranks. Steez and any higher end rod would be great. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 6, 2011 Super User Posted February 6, 2011 The G. Loomis is probably the better rod, but I am very happy with the Avid AVC70MM. 8-) Quote
fathom Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 have not used the avid mm but, if history follows suit, am gonna guess it's awfully close to the 843. in my hands, the avid mhm and the loomis cbr845 fish bad close to each other in terms of power and action...as does the avid hm and the cbr847. any slight difference between them may come from the difference in handle lengths...the handle on the cbr series is an inch or so shorter than the avid handles...if the handles were identical, one would be hard pressed to tell the difference between them. Super User Bassn Blvd Posted February 7, 2011 Super User Posted February 7, 2011 Ive got a Loomis 843 that I use to throw 1/4 ounce traps and cranks that run up 6'. The rod is perfect for those type baits. I just bought the larger series, M/H, and like it very much too. I have the 843 paired with a Daiwa Sol and use #8 Yozuri mono. Both are in mint condition and will sell for 285 shipped. Quote
johnD. Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I own the CBR843 and love it.I mainly throw square bill and lipless cranks with it.I don't really use large bill cranks at all ,but I'm sure it will work with them also. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted February 8, 2011 Super User Posted February 8, 2011 Get the Avid ;D Quote

Bassyak Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I haven't used the Loomis CBR843 but I have used a Loomis CBR781 and CBR864DF and the Avid AVC70MM. I sold the Avid mainly because of the hump in the grip right behind the reel seat. I know some folks like them (and the BPS Powerhump grips), but I have smaller hands and it wasn't comfortable for me. Other than that, it was a good rod for small to medium cranks, though I found it a little too "whippy" for the applications I was using it. I like the straight handle on the standard Loomis CBRs, but it seemed a bit short (IMO) for fishing anything other than small (~1/4oz or less), shallow running cranks. I like to be able to tuck the handle along my arm and up against my side when I'm cranking anything that dives more than about 4-5 feet. The Deep Flex rods have an extra 1 1/2 inches of handle, which led me to get the 864DF over the 845 for medium to deep runners. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted February 8, 2011 Super User Posted February 8, 2011 I would say take a look at the 7'MH-M Avid, I have fished one and it seemed well suited for most cranks. I had an 843 and honestly hated it. I felt it was too whippy and underpowered for most cranks. To me, an RC 1.5 just pushed it to it's limits. Quote
