Stasher1 Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 It's not a must, but I prefer it over mono and fluoro on spinning reels. I only use baitcast reels for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and lipless cranks and typically use mono or fluoro...for now. I'm seriously considering picking up a spool of 65lb braid before spring, though. I really like the visibility of yellow PowerPro. Quote
steezy Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Braid - frogs, heavy cover, jigs and my spinning reel. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 31, 2011 Super User Posted January 31, 2011 i use it for everything Quote
kLuo Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Braid is great for some things, and flat sucks for others. what does it flat out suck for? No doubt I would use fluoro over braid in certain situations, but I have yet to find a set up that braid "sucks" at. Quote
Hamby Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I went from all mono, to all braid, and now i only have braid on 1 rod. I fish with 5 rods. With the braid rod i throw frogs, buzzbaits, and other heavier lures. I have one with 15lb fluoro for jigs and heavier plastics. Another that i'm putting 12lb yo zuri hybrid on for lighter plastics, spinners, and cranks. Then two spinning rods. One getting the 12lb yo zuri for skipping docks and the other getting whatever mono i have leftover for really light stuff. For the one rod i have it on, i feel it is a MUST. For everything else, i prefer something else. Quote
0119 Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Probably depends on the angler but...braid sucks for topwater. If you react too quickly combined with braids no stretch. Buzzbaits too. If your the excitable type and react too fast...like me. Braid sucks for your teeth too. Cant cut braid with your teeth. Sucks for your wallet too, makes you need more tools to cut it. Quote
Fish Chris Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Yep. Braid is a must. About as important as oxygen Kinky, coily, stretchy arse monofilament needs to retire. Fluorocarbon is fine for leaders. Fused lines in the lighter lb tests makes good dental floss.... In fact, I think Johnson & Johnson is the main producer LOL Fish Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Nope not a must..Plenty of fish have be caught throughout history without the benefits if braided line. Its just another tool in fishing. Quote

Freezing air temps Concrete and or steel structure Zebra/quagga mussels Coontail on certain lakes - has zebes growing on it Deep smallie fishing. You simply get more bites on fluoro. Pretty much any treble hooked bait. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Braid is only on my frog rod, and musky setups. No need for braid on everything. Quote

Freezing air tempsAgree Concrete and or steel structureDisagree, I skip docks with braid..........no problems, check my line and re-tie often. Many big fish out from under some nasty steel everywhich way docks with out a problem Zebra/quagga musselsAgree, and add rocks in there as well Coontail on certain lakes - has zebes growing on it disagree same as docks, for some reason I haven't had too much trouble with braid and zebes on cover like wood/weeds, but those same mussles on rock............not good Deep smallie fishing. You simply get more bites on fluoro. 100% agree Pretty much any treble hooked bait.Disagree, In fact I couldn't disagree more on this one. It's more about the rod for me than the line. In certain situations braid is BETTER for treble hooked baits. That's all IMHO of coarse. One thing I have learned about braid and line in general is you could ask 10 guys what they like, and why and get 10 different answers, and reasons why they like what they like. And for the most parts, most of them are valid sound reasons. And I also learned you really don't change peoples minds on the what and why too often. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 31, 2011 Super User Posted January 31, 2011 All valid, ww2farmer. BTW, the zebe encrusted coontail is on Cayuga. When you're punching through it 12' down to get to the bottom at 15', and you are seeing frayed braid, its ugly, LOL. Quote

It sucks for dragging a jig over a limb and thinking it was a bass and setting the hook without removing your index finger from the line! It REALLY sucks for that! HAHA Jeff I have the sliced finger to prove it! Quote

I use braid with about a 10' Fluoro Leader for Drop Shot fishing for deep water (and shallow water) smallmouth. Since switching to braid, I feel that my set-up is more sensitive. Do you surmise that the braid 10' up the line could turn off Smallmouth? Quote

Do you surmise that the braid 10' up the line could turn off Smallmouth? I'm sure hes talking about going straight braid down to the hook, which will def cost you bites. I dropshot with 20lb Power pro to an 8'-10' leader of 8lb P line flouro. The braid 10' up will not effect your bites at all. I love this set up. I had the same braid on all my spinning reels all year last tourny season, and I still have more than half a spool of my p-line left over as well I know this works at least as well as J Francho's straight 6lb invisix setup B/C I have went fish for fish with him on dropshot smallies. Super User J Francho Posted January 31, 2011 Super User Posted January 31, 2011 Yep, I'll use both, 15# power pro + leader or straight fluoro. I prefer straight fluoro, though - especially when dragging. Quote

Super User South FLA Posted January 31, 2011 Super User Posted January 31, 2011 Braid is not a must, but its on most of my rods for techniques I use in Florida. As with anything new, there is a learning curve and once you get past it, braid will improve you fishing. Basically, its a tool that can help you be a more successful angler at times and as with any tool, you must know when and how to use it. Its like asking if pitching is a must, the answer is no, but without it you are limiting yourself. Quote
Loomis24 Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 Thanks for the information guys. I'm going to pick up some braid before spring Quote
Loomis24 Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 I'm probably going to buy some flouro leaders to go with the braid, what's the difference between the leader material than the actual flouro line itself, or is there any difference, just curious. Quote

Usually a bit stiffer for abrasion resistant. I like Seagur for strict leader material and 100% Flouro for mainline. Quote
