ctf58 Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Which one, Shimano is $30 With great reviews and the Abu is on sale for $30 marked down from $50. Both have spare spools, the Shimano is 4 bearing, the Abu is 7+1 bearing. Both weigh about 9oz. The Abu sounds kind of big 210/10 compared to the Shiomano 140/8. Be for bass fishing on a 7foot Med. action rod. I got a $20 gift card to spend at Cabelas. This will be my first spinning reel, been a baitcaster guy up to now. What you guys think??? Quote
central.PA.bass Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 i have both.. i really like my cardinals.. I have the 404i and it is a great reel.. I have an older cardinal that has been going strong for 9 years now... Purchased the Sienna last year for christmas to be primarily a steelhead and dropshot reel... I dont know if i ever used it though.. my fiancee claimed it! haha Just from my experience, I would go with the Cardinal Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 5, 2011 Super User Posted February 5, 2011 The aforementioned cardinal is a 4000 series reel, usable for bass but most people would opt for that reel in a smaller size, the 402, if available at the sale price. I have owned both Shimano & Abu spinning reels, but not those models. I don't recommend something I have never used. If it were me the decision would be pretty simply just based on physical evidence. Either way there isn't much to lose as both reels are inexpensive. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 5, 2011 Super User Posted February 5, 2011 Both are decent cheaper reels , go with the smaller size for bass. Quote
ctf58 Posted February 5, 2011 Author Posted February 5, 2011 Thanks for the replies. They do have a Abu Cardinal 400UI-C for the same price but it sounds to small. The 400UI only holds 100/4 and has a max drag of 6lbs. I was planning on using 8lbs mono or 15lbs braid if the braid spooled good on it. I will be fishing ponds and KY lake. I figured that with the larger Abu 404i I could put some backer on the spool so that the loops off the spool would not be to tight. Am I thinking right? Quote
