I still use my Dad's Abu 5000, the round red one. It is spooled with 14# Ironsilk and I usually throw lipless cranks with it. It casts a mile but as you can imagine the drag is a little hinky at times. I still have the leather case, instruction booklet, wrench, oil, and a spare parts tube with spare parts.I think I can remember him using it in the early 70's. So I am guessing it is a late 60's or early 70's model, but not sure. Anybody have any idea how far back these reels go?

The 5000 was introduced in 1954. A true classic, that reel revolutionized bass fishing.

Maybe first introduced here in '54, but most books put it at Christmas of '52.  Borgstrum also made 100s of samples '51 through '52.

Until a little over a year ago, I regularly fished my 1977 Shimano Bantam XG. It would probably still be working if I hadn't took it apart and lost a couple of springs. It was an amazing reel that seemed to get better with age. I still fish mostly Shimano reels.

Very similar, but even older. Mine was a xg10 with a chrome spool release button like an old ABU 5000. It worked flawlessly until I decided to mess with it. LOL

Wow.. how old are those reels that I have posted?  I can't find much information on them.. It'd be cool to fix them up and get them running.. but both only cast about as far as a 2 year old can throw..  probably just need a good cleaning.

Here's a pic that I found quickly. It's on the front edge of the table. I could cst mine a mile until I messed with it. LOL

I said XG and it's actually SG. I don't think they have much value. You can buy them cheap on ebay.

I still have a 20 year old Quantum Snapshot spinning reel in service... on a Rhino Rod.

That was my top of the line setup when I was 16.

I've got a Shakespeare 1980 President II model HB (whew!) that still sees occasional use. It's built like a tank and weighs about the same as one. It was my striper trolling reel for many years. Now that I don't fish from a boat anymore, it gets used to chuck heavy lures for wipers, and for catfishing duty.

That was my first true modern baitcast reel. To this day I have no idea what happened to it. Very good reel at the time.
