Fat-G Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Alright folks, I need a spinning rod as much as I hate to admit it. The Tec Spec is a great rod for the money, I just want something longer and more balanced. I don't need a $300 combo, as I don't use spinning tackle that much. Although I'm going to try some finesse techniques this year, so I'll use them more often than before. This might be a tough one though. I'm looking for one rod as an all-around spinning rod to cover everything I would use it for. I'm looking to spend $80 tops, and I'm considering the Clarus. It will be paired with a Sahara 2500 and 6 or 8lb Yozuri Hybrid. It will be used for: Weightless Ikas Flick Shaking (3/32 & 1/8) Shakey Heads Drop Shots, if I ever throw one Split-shot rigs Light t-rigs And maybe others I can't think of right now. I was thinking of the 7' MF model, any suggestions? Quote

Well, the only thing that would make it a difficult say is the Ika. It's a pretty heavy bait so an XF might not be the best option. I definitely see what your saying though, especially for the Flick Shakes. 70% of the Flick Shakes will be the 6.8 versions, so I guess that'll be heavier than the common finesse worm. Quote
Fat-G Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 I should probably also throw this out there, the Shakey Heads and t-rigs will be 1/8-1/4 oz. weight wise. The plastics will be anything from Rage Baby Craws to Trick Worms, etc. Heavier than most "finesse" presentations. Quote

Might wanna check that out, I don't think it's a limited time offer or anything and I will probably be heading down there at some point to get one of those as well. Quote

Fat Ikas on a M/XF Powell work just fine for me. If you can stretch your budget to $100 or so, you'll get some great choices. Have you already bought the Sahara? It's a great reel no doubt. The reel I use for identical techniques is a cheapo Shimano Sonora (retails for $50 or so). I have it on a Powell Max spinning. The combo has seen some extensive use and hasn't let me down yet. Quote

Super User deep Posted January 31, 2011 Super User Posted January 31, 2011 Hey Fat-G, since you mentioned "an all-around spinning combo", let me throw in my 2 cents for what it's worth. I have 3 spinning combos: 7'3" M/XF Powell Max spinning + Shimano Sonora + Daiwa Samurai: bottom contact lures, meaning weightless T-rigs, T-rigs, wacky rigs, and small jigs. By far this is the most sensitive rod I have. I'm glad I spent the maximum I could on the rod. I did skimp on the reel to spend on the rod though. So far it has worked out. 7' Team All Star M/MF + Browning Citori + Sufix Siege: this is my all purpose spinning set-up for any lures in the weight range 1/4 - 1/2 oz, excepting of course the soft plastics. 6' Ultralight set-up: for lures under 1/4 oz, small topwater, little inline spinners and spoons. I use it for panfish and trout. When I use it for bass, I try to put on some 2/10 or 4/15 braid. Quote

BPS has a sale on rods and there is an IM6 for $25 you may want to consider to practice with before you invest in a high priced spinning rod. Then again, that may be a baitcaster rod. But check it out. A 6'6" medium heavy spinning rod in your price range is easy to find. Just look in your BPS catalog and you will see a lot of them. Let us know what you get. Quote

Plus I don't really use them enought to warrant $80+. I also need a flippin' rod. ;D Sam- I'm a spinning rod MASTER haha! I love spinning rigs, they just have taken a backseat in my arsenal. I just need one really for throwing Ikas and Flick Shakes. All of the other things I rarely if ever throw. Basically this will be a "just in case" rod. Quote

Although I've only used an Ika once...but I caught a beautiful 4.5 lb chunk. Which leads to the question why haven't I thrown them more. Quote

I went with BPS Carbonlite with Johnny Morris Elite spinning reel. I am very happy with this combo. I'm guessing these rods will go on sale in the next month or so. repper Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I don' tknow what they sell for these days, but the Compre is worth the extra money when compared to the Clarus. the Compre is a great rod for the money, and a 7' medium Compre would be a nice fit for ya. But i do agree with those that say extra money spent on the finesse spinning rod is money well spent. Of course it's hard to prove because you will never feels those bites you miss with the cheaper rods, so you won't know you are missing them. And a Daiwa Exceler spinning reel has been a workhorse for my son over the last couple of seasons. Quote
