I am thinking of picking up a Shimano Citica 201E, but I am not sure I should spend that much.  I have started to look on line a bit, and have seen some good deals.  What concerns me is that you don't know what you are getting.  I have had some bad experiences, and heard stories, with ebay.

I feel there are values to buying new, and will save up if i need to.  If that is the case, where is the best place to buy new.  All of the big stores have the same price, but some online sites have lower prices.  Why is that? Any advice on how not to get ripped off would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, the flea market on here is a good place for used.  If you buy new on eBay - just stick with Power Sellers.  I've never had a problem when I chose Power Sellers with at least 99% positive ratings.  I wouldn't pay more than $95 for a new Citica, with free shipping.

Indeed!  ;)

I have bought many used items here, and only had one problem(6 months ago) out of the 30 plus items I got.

I have purchased 3 reels used off ebay and agree you should only purchase from power sellers or someone with at least a 98-99% rating. I haven't had a bad experience either buying or selling a reel on ebay.

I also have to suggest the flea market here.  It really opens up other possibilities as well.  I recently bought a Curado 201E7 that looks and works like it has never been used, spooled with 20lb power pro, for $100 shipped.  You can get a lot more reel for your money there.

I just bought a 301dsv and like it (for $100), but want a smaller reel with a 6.x:1 ratio.  I would go for the curado but, I am not sure weather to get a 5:1 or 7:1.  I use my rods and reels for a wide range of techniques and figure the middle is a good place to be.

I have a virtually new citica I'll sell you for $60 shipped. It has the three tiniest tiniest little pin ***** looking scratches on the side cover plate that covers the centrifugal breaking pins.

I have probably used it 6 times. I just don't like it. It's not for me. I have been spoiled by the Abu Garcia Revo Premiers! I love them, but my wallet don't!

You ready to sell me that 301d yet?   ;D

Absolutely not!  I haven't actually fished it yet, but I have done some practice casting in the snow when the temp reached the mid 20's one day.  I can't wait to try it on the water.

This reel is why I want another shimano.  If the curado 201E came in a 6:1 ratio I would be all over it.

The Curado50E is smaller and has a 6.X:1 gear ratio.

I wouldn't be afraid to buy here on the flea market or E-bay.  Pictures are a must and on E-bay look at feedback.  They don't have to have 100% and you can look as to why they are at 96% or whatever.

I have used E-bay a ton without any problems.  I have been somewhat carefull who I buy from though.  If you make a habit of screwing people on E-bay you won't last very long and your feedback will show it.

As far as people selling new stuff there for discounted prices,  I think its basically a situation where they're selling quantity for less profit.

In many cases, they're running their business out of their home or garage, so they have very little overhead, unlike your typical baitshop. No staff and no store front means they can sell for less than the "big guys" and still make a profit.
