kadas Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Ok rods, not so good reels I think it's a downgrade. X2--Bas Pro dropped all or changed the names of reels and rods to take pro's names off products--surely a royalty money saving issue--W&M rods seem ok but I have handled(not fished) the Victory reel--felt cheap IMO only :-/ Quote
kadas Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 While it may not be 100% honest, it's sure an accepted practice. How much advertising is 100% honest? Very little that I see.I can tell you with 100% certainty that many of the rods and reels are NOT what you buy off the shelf. But the masses will never see or notice a difference. Many of the reels are the same basic reels, but upgraded and tuned... rods vary from OE parts built by a master builder to complete customs with decals and color schemes that match the factory rods. This is just one reason I would never buy equipment based on a spokesman or pro user. sorry to stray off topic. Completely agree Quote
Evans Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 I own a lot of the skeet rods, getting ready to own a lot more, but the reels.....seem like complete garbage. I've heard nothing but bad reviews on them and only handled one at a store and that was enough for me. Wish they could make them as good as the rods because I absolutely love the rods. As far as Mr. Clunn coming to the pro staff.... well.....he is still laughing all the way to the bank! I'm guessing he will change to a "prototype" at some point in the season and have his own signature rods out by the end of the year. I have never bought a rod just because somebody's name is on it, I think we all stopped doing that somewhere in middle school! However, I did buy 2 of the skeet rods to try out when my okuma rod broke because they matched my boat and all the hype about them. I am just as satisfied with them now as I was the first time I casted one. I'm sure there are better rods out there, but those rods are a really good fit for me. My only complaint is that annoying hook keeper(getting ready to file some of those off!!). Quote
bmadd Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Tin and I talked a lot about Skeet during the post season. If you watch the videos he was missing tons of bites on the hooksets. They didn't look like very solid sets but those rods could've had a lot to do with it if he were using the off the shelf models. Quote
jagdbdg Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 He may have been dropped or he may have left. Now if your a consumer going to Bass Pro to buy a rod and reel are you going to buy the Rick Clunn model or for the same price or a little more a pro qualifer reel or carbonlite. Im sure his stuff was not selling when you have smaller, lighter better reels to select from or rods. From a businees stand point why not drop him and his line if your doing way better with other equipment and not have to pay him. Quote
Sherlock 60 Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 It was a bit odd a week or two ago when the Lindners were using Quantum bass flipping sticks and bass reels while fishing for muskies (after all those years of using Shimano's muskie-specific gear). And they commented about how important it is to use the proper equipment. Go figure... Quote
