I just put in an order for a new Abu Garcia Veritas and now need a reel for it. I like what I am seeing for the Revo SX and then a friend is really pushing the Shimano Curado. What do you guys think?

Thanks for the help,

Zack Baker

Go with your first idea. The SX is a fine reel. I like it much better than the Curado. The Caenan is an interesting idea, the Graphite frame wouldnt bother me near as much as those stupid foam grips. Take it from somebody who got one of the first CI4's, they dont last.

I don't care if you get a Revo or a Curado, but you will be wasting money if you don't look at Bass Tackle Outlet:

http://www.americanbassoutlet.com/

Revo's are priced $30 under what most other places charge.  I bought two Curados a week or so ago and saved $72!  Shipping costs only $4 per/order.

A guy would have to be crazy not to check out this BR sponsor.   :D

Check out the new Lew's Tournament Speed Spool ..... $149 and would be my choice over anything suggested above.

You can get a Revo Premier for under $200 on fleabay.

That's the way I'd go, too. Just like the STX, only 2 ounces lighter. I have an SX and 4 of the Premier's, all the latest versions. Nothing wrong with the SX, but it is a bit over priced compared to stepping up to an STX, at least at MSRP. But when you consider you can get new Premier's for under $200 online, it's a no brainer.

A caution on the Revo's, though. Make sure when you're looking at them, any of them, that you're getting the latest models. Some of the 09 models were not nearly as well received. The newer stuff, from '10 on, are almost universally praised.

You can ask this question to 10 people and get 11 different answers. Each brand has its fans and haters. IMO it's hard to go wrong on a $100> baitcaster. If you have an idea what kind of baits and techniques you'll be fishing you might get more useful feedback. Certain models to excel in certain areas.

The Abu rods are supposed to be balanced etc. with their reels so if you believe that, I would stay with a Revo. I have had them...they're OK. The Shimano Citica which can be had for $99.99 or less is one fine reel for the money. The Curado 200e7- 201e7 is a burner so not really an all around reel.

Good luck!

If you look back through the last 10, 50 or 200 pages

in this section, you'll run across this question a few

times. The answers are usally the same. "Best"

always depends on the reel(s) the responder fishes.

I favor Shimano, others love their Abu Garcia, BPS,

Pflueger, Diawa, Johnny Morris, Pinnacle, Quantum, etc.

So, if you have the opportunity to borrow a few reels and

try them out for yourself, that would be ideal.Otherwise,

you're kind of stuck trusting the recommendations

from either friends or guys here that you respect.

But even in that regard, some of our best fisherman

still fish the wrong reels!

:D

p.s. I recommend the Curado 200E7

For this rod I would probably be fishing deep to mid crankbaits and jigs. Since I am just starting out in the higher end fishing world I am looking for a well rounded reel to get at first though.

STX or the Curado would be fine for those, as would a number of other reels mentioned.

RW hit it on the head.  Pick someone that you trust and/or respect and use what they use.

Like DVT said, you can't really go wrong in the price range you are looking at. IMO, nobody makes "crap" reels in that price range.

I have fished Daiwa, Shimano, Abu, and Quantum in that price range and had no real problems with any of them.  I personally prefer Daiwas now and have sold all the others but that is just a personal preference.  Best thing to do is get on ***.com and do the demo this reel that they have.  They send you the one you want to try and if you like it you keep it and pay for it, if not send it back and try another till you find the one you like.

Nobody mentioned a Pflueger President or Patriarch...so i will.

By the way, the President ($150) can be found on sale at Academy for $90 right now! 8-)
