MMan16 Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 I'm trying to send a rod back to the manufacturer to have a small problem fixed. So today I went to the USPO and they said it would be 93 bucks. The tube the rod is in is 96in the lady there said to try Fedex but how much cheaper could they be? The reason i'm posting is to see if anyone else has ran into this problem and what solutions if any they found? I'm going to try Fedex but before i drive around with a 96in tube hanging out the window of my F-350 I want to make sure its gonna be cheaper. Thanks for any help Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted January 24, 2011 Super User Posted January 24, 2011 I have sent and received rods by usps and other carriers and it's usually sround $15-20. I can't think of why she would have told you $93, unless the tube was filled with concrete. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted January 24, 2011 Super User Posted January 24, 2011 Maybe this will help to verify the shipping charges: http://www.usps.com/tools/calculatepostage/welcome.htm I sent a rod back a while ago and I can't remeber how much it was, but I think deakNH03 is close. I believe UPS & FedEX have the same type of shipping calculator. Quote
OHIO Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 I sent a Veritas back and it cost me $26 with FedEx. Quote
crankbait2009 Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 i recently shipped a 7' rod via ups a couple states away for $7. couldnt beat that. ohio - maryland Quote
BassThumb Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 The prices I've been charged by UPS and FedEx to ship in the US have ranged from $18-29. How heavy is your package? $90some bucks is a joke. Quote
JigMe Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 90 dollars? Where are u sending it to? China? I usually pay 20 bucks to ship my rods, and I use UPS. Quote
MMan16 Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 I'm sending it to CA so it is across the country but I still think it was ridiculous. Its a 7'6" rod the tube measures 96in and I was putting insurance on it. The lady said I was getting charged an over sized package rate on top of all the other charges. Its definitely the biggest thing I have ever sent away but it seems ludicrous to send a rod away for just shy of half the value of the rod. Quote
Ferstler Slim Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 So, wouldnt length be 7'6" = 90" width = lets say 5" x2 = 10" Height = lets say 5" x2 = 10" 90+10+10 Total 110" ? I'm not arguing just wondering how they do their math? Dave UPS goes by L + (wx2) + (hx2). "A Large Package Surcharge may apply to domestic and international shipments. A package is considered a "Large Package" when its length plus girth [(2 x width) + (2 x height)] combined exceeds 130 inches, but does not exceed the maximum UPS size of 165 inches. Large Packages are subject to a minimum billable weight of 90 pounds. An Additional Handling charge will not be assessed when a Large Package Surcharge is applied." Might as well be cement in there. So yes across the country could be $90. ....Bill Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted January 25, 2011 Super User Posted January 25, 2011 I tried to ship a 7'6" rod tube via USPS and the charge was $85. Took it home and cut off 2" and mailed it for $21. Quote
smbrule Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Surcharges for some postal zones can increase rod shipment costs by~50%. From Iowa I shipped two rods via the USPS on the same day. One to CA and one to MI. Costs was ten dollars more to ship to MI. Go figure?? Both went to a residential address. Quote
Super User Alpster Posted January 25, 2011 Super User Posted January 25, 2011 I build custom rods and ship them all over the country. Never use the Post Office. Best bet is UPS. Also you must get the length under 8' and the diameter of the tube 3" or less to avoid rediculous oversize charges. It cost me $60 to ship a rod to fourbizz in CA from NJ because the rod was over 8'. The rod I shipped to SFC AL was only $26. It was only 7' and I got it into a 2" tube. Shipping a rod is expensive, If a rod is not worth a lot of money, you can't afford to ship them. Tip, get a local rod builder to repair your rod, it might cost less than shipping. Ronnie Quote
FishinTN Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I use usps all the time. I usually get hit with that large package surcharge(just recently). It costs me 22.0-28.00 depending in insurance. Quote
Ineedanewscreenname20170204 Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Just shipped rods three separate times within the last week - all through UPS and right at $21. USPS gets you a few different ways shipping rods. UPS and Fedex are better but get the length as short as possible and the diameter as small as possible. And add packing material so the rods can't shift around because they toss these things like bails of hay. Secure multiple rods butt to tip to protect fragile tips. Quote

This $29 package I sent was sold to a BR member in the South. It was actually some jerry rigged deal where I had to connect two tubes together with heavy staples and duct tape because I didn't have a tube that would fit a 7' 11" flippin stick. The UPS rep said I was still under the length limit by a few inches. This was about this time last winter. Maybe some things have changed, but it was $29, and I thought that was even a little steep. MMan16 Posted January 27, 2011 Author Posted January 27, 2011 I recently e-mailed the rod company and they said they would send me the guides free of charge. The problem I now face is were to have them fixed i don't really know anyone near me that is good with fixing rods. They said they would locate a person nearby if possible. I guess we will wait and see what happens. Was hoping the rod company would work with me a little more than they are. The rod is only a season old and wasn't cheap by any means. Quote
