Boss Hogg Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Hey guys and gals. I have a question I'm in the market in buying a flippin and pitchin set up either a combo or buying separate. Last year my buddy got me into it so I'm looking to buy a set up I got about 400-450 to spend on a combo or spearate. Quote
Texasfishingtips Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 I use a OLD diawa rod. 6' 6' MH, paired with a quantum burst with 65lb braid. Dont use this combo much, so I aint invested much money in it. Clancy W Quote
Super User David P Posted January 23, 2011 Super User Posted January 23, 2011 It really depends how heavy of cover you will be flipping and pitching. The Dobyns 795 DX Extreme flipping stick is one awesome stick. 7'9 and plenty of power to fish just about all types of cover, yet still able to fish lighter cover. The rod will put you with only about $100 to spend on a reel, but Revo S or old model Revo STX can both be found for somewhere right in that range. The Revo lineup of reels has an awesome drag which really helps for that heavier cover. If you want a slightly less expensive rod, the Dobyns 765 Champion is a great rod as well. All just depends on what your preferences are. Quote
Boss Hogg Posted January 23, 2011 Author Posted January 23, 2011 Most of the places ill be fishing will be in heavy cover and there are some spots that are light cover. But I want a good setup with plenty of back bone. If I have to spend a little more that's no problem I need to check those two rods out. Quote
dude loves to fish Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Check out the Kistler Rods. These are the most lightest and most sensitive rods that I have ever used. You can now go to their website and build your own custom rod for the application you want to use it for. I have 4 of the new custom z bones and I will be getting more. Great Rods. Quote

If only the best will do....I have this rod, I should say I have a custom I built on this IMX blank. Light as a feather and strong as a boat oar. mcipinkie Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Man, You got $450 to spend on one rod/reel combo. You can get all you would ever need for half that. BPS has the 7'-6 Veritas for a $100. You can get a Johnny Morris signature for $120. D**n fine rods. I just picked up a new Veritas, but the weather is bad in MO so I haven't tried it out. The BPS Extreme is also a good buy for $100. Amazon had the Denny Brauer Ardent F700 reel for $140 last week. If you are just getting started, try something mid-range. You won't be disappointed. Spool up with some 50 - 65 lb. braid and you'll be cooking. Quote
GLoomis711 Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Are you fishing matted grass, laydowns, or docks, ect. Yesterday at Basspro I held the 7'6'' flipping stick and it is a mighty fine rod for 100$, and could easily be placed in the 150 dollar range, with SiC inserts. If you're looking for a Telescopic Flipping stick, the GL2 is an absolute beast. I just lately got a Dobyns 765 and haven't fished it yet, but so far it's a fine rod too. But, you could get a Veritas 7'3'' and a Veritas 7'6'' to cover all of your frog, hollow body swimbaits, flipping and pitching needs. Quote
bryand82487 Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Find a used 7' 2" Cumara MH X-fast and throw the Core 100 MGFV on there. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 25, 2011 Super User Posted January 25, 2011 Bass Hog, all of the above replies are correct so you can actually go nuts trying to pick out a flipping and pitching combo. I use both a baitcaster and spinning rig, depending on where I am fishing. I use a 7' MH graphite rod with a Curado baitcaster or a 2500 Shimano spinning reel or the new Abu Premier 30 spinning reels. May I suggest Denny Brauer's DVD or book, Denny Brauer's Jig Fishing Secrets? Excellent reading or viewing and you will learn a lot from the flip and pitch master. In chapter 7 here is a synoposis of what Denny says: Graphite Rods and Reels: Medium to Medium Heavy Rods 7 and a Half Foot Rod 7 Foot Rod in Clear Water 6:3:1 Baitcaster Gear Ratio Denny says he can control his accuracy better and have more leverage and control over the fish with a baitcaster. Just food for thought. Now go out and get that G. Loomis pitching and flipping stick along with a Shimano CORE reel!!!! ;D ;D ;D And get the DVD or book, too. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 25, 2011 Super User Posted January 25, 2011 P.S. Seems to be typo above but you get the picture. Quote

Boss Hogg Posted January 26, 2011 Author Posted January 26, 2011 Its really in good shape. He got it rebuilt or something like that about 2 months ago I used it once and its feels alright Quote
Dockhead Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 How about a Powell Max 766 and a Curado E7. Use the extra cash for line, baits hooks, etc. By the way, where in the world is Middleburg? Quote
Carrington Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Try out that jb custom rod i was telling you about, the "frog n rat" Quote
Joe D Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 For what it worth, one of the lakes I fish is absolutley choked with timber and I flip alot. I have several of the F700's and they are great for me. One of the reasons I really like them is that with the smaller spool you waste alot less line, but a plus I didn't expect is that they are very easy to skip under docks and overhanging limbs. Small spool, less line, alot less backlash on a bad skip. I'm not sure if I like the preset drag, but that is a small trade off for me. Also they pitch small baits very well. As far as rods I have three older team Diawa and am about to buy my second America Rodsmiths Wreckin Stick, I really like this rod and it works for me. 350.00 for the combo, but if you wait a bit it will be on sale for 20% off at tackle warehouse or bass tackle depot buring the spring sales.
