central.PA.bass Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Hey all.. I called BPS and they sent me parts for my Extreme... I need to replace the levelwind worm gear and the pall.. can anyone give me a step by step on how to do this? I'd like to do it myself.. and while i'm replacing it, id also like to get some upgraded drag washers... does anyone know which ones from smooooth drag will work? I'm gonna order a set for my Revo Premier as well.. thanks for all the help! Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Jimmy, May I suggest that you have the reel professionally serviced and the new parts installed as part of that process? If the pawl and worm gear are that bad, there may be other isses internally. The cost of a service for forum members is $16.20. The drag kit for that, I believe is the 2 piece Revo kit. It costs $6.50 retail. If you decide to DIY, first thing you need to do before opening any reel is to obtain a schematic. You can contact me offline if you'd like and I'll try to walk you through it. Super User BrianinMD Posted January 17, 2011 Super User Posted January 17, 2011 Unless you are really comfortable with the chance of ending up with a BPS Extreme paperweight I would suggest sending it to Mike at DVT. Just got 6 reels back he cleaned/serviced for me. Great quick service, in addition to the discounts. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted January 17, 2011 Super User Posted January 17, 2011 i cant imagine the worm gear being bad. the paw can be changed by removing the cap holding it. there should be a brass spacer in there. duck soup. Quote

This depends on what made the pawl bad to begin with and how long it went undetected (or vise versa). Most of the bad worm gears I come across are the result of something other than normal wear. Like trying to clean off the old oil with a paper towel, and the worm gear sucking up the paper towel and getting stuck in the pawl. Lesson learned Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I had a Calcutta reel come in over the summer that got a piece of the braid sucked into the level wind. The pawl it that and the rest... is history. Sand raises hell with'em too. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted January 18, 2011 Super User Posted January 18, 2011 Use and dirt kills them. That, and physical damage. I've learned over time to just replace the worm shaft and pawl in one shot. Quote
central.PA.bass Posted January 19, 2011 Author Posted January 19, 2011 i'd like to try this one myself though.. im gonna tear into it next week here at school... what will i need on hand to get it done? (this reel was givin to me.. I was told all it needed was a pall and levelwind worm gear..) so for 10 bucks i have the parts.. just need to work up the guts to fix it.. Quote
central.PA.bass Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 well i had bps send me the schematic via email and i noticed that the reason my levelwind wasnt working was because it was missing 3 pieces that hold it in place.. haha.. instead of just replacing the missing pieces i replaced the worm gear and another part that came with it.... put it back together and it was as good as new! I learned a lot about a reel just by tearing it apart and putting it back together.. Just took some guts.. hahah Quote
