Using braid with a flouro leader?? Let's hear it folks!!!

Hey all..

For a while now I have used braid in heavy cover and flouro for all my jigs and lighter spinning tackle. I use to use braid for everything! I am thinking of using braid with flouro leader across the board this year...from jigs to spinning gear. I would value input from members here...good idea??....bad idea???? How does this affect sensitivity???

There wont be a noticable sensitivity diffrence as long as you dont go more than a rod length or so with the leader.

I use braid w/ 2 yards floro leader for all my baitcasting.  Does not affect sensitivty, can feel the slightest tick on the the lure.  I use Uni 4 turns on the fc and Bloodknot 13 turns on the braid.

I always use Fireline Crystal so I can see the bites and have great strength. I also use 24" of Andre Florocarbon LEADER line. It is a bit hard to find but I get mine at BPS. Be sure to use "LEADER" material and I tie mine with a Surgeons Knot. I have never had a line or knot failure. I am a believer.

I second the Ande Flouro Leader. You get 50yds for the cost of 25yds of Seaguar.

Uni to Uni works great. I also use the small spro barrel swivels pretty effectively.

Well I use that set up on all my spinning gear, I simply love the way braid handles on spinning tackle. I also use it for frogging, but that's all. My baitcasting pitching gear is 100% fluro. Over time I've developed a feel for fluro on my pitching gear and sometimes wind or other circumstances causes a slack line on braid and then the sensitivity is gone. I've also hurt my wrist from hook sets with braid.

I like using the fluoro leader for a couple reasons.  I talked myself into trying it for the "best of both worlds" reasons, getting the sensitivity of braid with the invisibility of fluoro at the lure.  But, I've stuck with it for different reasons.

First - if you retie a lot, whether for a lure switch or just to maintain knot integrity, that could mean cutting out a lot of braid.  That gets expensive.  I like only having to cut out braid when I'm replacing the leader.  A spool of fluoro lasts a long time when you're only using 6 to 8 feet at a time.

Second - if you have to break off a snag, it's a fairly safe bet that you'll break off at the leader.  Again, saving your main line.

If abrasion is your concern, then use leader material.  That can be expensive, though.

What is the difference between the leader only flouro and flouro in general?? :-?

The leader material is generally a little "harder."  It's much stiffer than a standard mainline fluoro.  Better abrasion resistance like Francho mentioned.  It is a bit on the pricey side though.  I personally haven't had any issues using standard mainline fluorocarbon for my leaders.

Ignore the uni-uni splice.  Learn how to tie the Albright and the Alberto (modified albright).  Both of them are much more compact, they protect the fluoro portion of the knot, and are stronger.  Takes very little time to tie one once you get the hang of it.
