lynyrdsky1 Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 What would work? Kind of new to the idea. I was thinking like a 6'6 medium action and I was going to pair it with a Citica but would like someones opinion on this. Quote
TBendBassin Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Falcon Cara T7 Micro Guide Casting Rod 6'7" Med Hvy Extra Fast "Weightless Worm" rod. It is one of the finest jerkbait rods i have ever used. I would never use it for any worm fishing its to soft. If you dont wana spend that much you can get the same rod in falcons lowrider series Quote

I was thinking like a 6'6 medium action and I was going to pair it with a Citica but would like someones opinion on this. A 6'6" Med power, is an excellent choice. I also would make sure it's a fast action. A slower taper tends to load the rod a bit too much for my liking when I am working jerkbaits aggressively. Quote

Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted January 17, 2011 Super User Posted January 17, 2011 I use two rods, a 7'M-XF Daiwa Zillion and a 6'10''MH-F Carrot Stix Gold. I like a stiffer rod for working smaller jerkbaits with a quicker, more erratic action. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted January 18, 2011 Super User Posted January 18, 2011 I prefer spinning equipment for jerkbaits because mostly, when the jerkbait bite is on, it is windy, and I have issues trying to make long distance casts in the wind on bait cast gear. I think it is important to be able to throw jerkbaits a long ways. The past few years I've used a 6'3" medium lite rod which had an extra fast action. I think it was a Shimano, but I don't remember the number. Next year I'm going to a 7 1/2 ft. medium lite rod which has a fast action. I use 14 lb Fireline with a fluorocarbon leader to throw jerkbaits. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted January 18, 2011 Super User Posted January 18, 2011 Avid AVC66MF This rod has a fast tip, but is soft enough to manage treble hook lures. The 6'6" length allow you to work the jerkbait easily. I think you will find this to be a great rod for topwater lures, yoo! 8-) Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 18, 2011 Super User Posted January 18, 2011 You need a short handle, and you don't want to be slapping the water with your tip. I like a fast taper for quick recovery after twitching. A medium power rod has enough flex in the backbone to protec the line and trebles. I use an Avid AVC62MXF. Reel speed doesn't matter, its just something to hold the line, fight the fish. Make sure its comfortable. Quote

If you dont wana spend that much you can get the same rod in falcons lowrider series I have the Lowrider XG version of this rod, and yep, it feels more like a moderate fast or fast than an extra fast taper. I love it for spinnerbaits and jerkbaits though, since it loads em up nicely to toss lighter ones out far with a baitcaster. I just got a 7' MH Mod Fast Dobyns Champ "crankbait/jerkbait" rod, so I will test it out this coming spring and see if it really is any better for jerkbaits than my old Falcon. Quote

So using MH is ok for jerbaits? Whats the difference between using MH or M for Jerbaits? I thought having the lighter action would make it easier casting smaller sized jerkbaits? Quote

Remember Power ratings are not the same across brands. One companies MH is another's M. In general though I like a M 6'6" with a Fast or better yet XFast taper. I like how this rod sets up to work the bait and fight the fish. And Francho is right about a shorter handle. I've had "jerk bait rods" that I've cut the handle down a bit on because it was too long to "jerk" all day. JMHO Quote
rayrock99 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I use a St. Croix Legend tournament jerkbait rod paired with a Daiwa AlphasF supertuned spooled with 10lb flouro. Really like that combo for jerkbaits. Quote
