Looking for a good rod for the application of throwing 1/2 red eye shads. trying not to break the bank and keeping it around 100.

any thoughts

was thinking of the mojo bass cranking rod vs the kvd cranking rod. but its another 50 for the kvd. any comparisons of these two heads up?

I don't know anything about the kvd rod but the mojo is a nice rod and St.croix is a great company to buy from. 7' MH will suit your needs and will work great for ripping it out of weeds to.

Personally, I don't find it advantageous to use an actual cranking rod for lipless rattle baits.

I use a 7'4" Medium Power/Fast Action BPS Extreme rod. I fish grass a lot , and it is tough for me to rip a bait out of it with a moderately paced rod.

You don't have as much forgiveness when fighting a fish as you would with a cranking rod, but there is still enough play to help out in that area with the medium/fast.

I really don't like glass cranking rods for my lipless stuff... I usually am ripping them through grass or yo-yoing them, and I just feel that a graphite rod comes in handy for the feel I like to have in these situations. Its just a personal thing though. I used to throw them on a cranking rod, but I feel like my hook ups increased on graphite.  For that price though I like the carrot stixs and the lamiglas excels.

I've been using a 6'10" MH/MF Quantum Tour Edition "KVD Signature Series" spinnerbait rod (PTC6106FKV) for my lipless cranks, chatterbaits, and spinnerbaits and really like the action. It's labeled a MH/F, but it really falls somewhere between a fast and a med-fast.

This particular rod is a few years old and has been discontinued, but they show up on Ebay every now and then for about $100, which is 1/2 of what they were originally.

im not so sure you want a mojo rod. they are tip heavy and a big lipless bait adds to that. before you drop your cash id try to go store fish one.

I don't use a cranking rod for lipless cranks, and don't plan on starting either. What I use works just fine, and I can use the rod(s) for other things when I am not fishing lipless cranks.  Check on e-bay for a Kistler Mag TS 6'9" MH "all purpose special". Simmons has them for $68 bucks right now. Great lipless rod, and can handle many other tasks as well. Besides lipless cranks, I also use mine for, spinnebaits, topwater, square bills, soft and hard jerkbaits, senkos, jigs, and t-rigs around moderate cover. Great rod for the $$.

x2 ~

Santa delivered the newer red model that I'm looking forward to trying for this also.

It seems a bit lighter but the tip is a little softer as well, which might not be desirable, we'll see.

I use a 7' M St. Croix Premeir for my lipless.  It casts them a mile and has a very soft tip I rarely lose a fish with it.  I think its hard to beat at $100

I used an older pflueger trion cranking rod that has a parabolic action. Because I have the reflexes of a jungle cat, I needed something with a little slower reaction time.  ;D ;D ;D

Also, not much grass up here in the lakes I fish so I do not have to "rip" free from the grass.

I have also used the mojo bass crankin rod, and liked it till an insert fell out.  >:)

Depends on the cover you're fishing.  With grass, you need backbone to rip the bait free.  And the sensitivity to feel the grass and feel the bait stop moving.

The KVD rods are right at the edge of having enough sensitivity to satisfy that requirement.  The learning curve is short.  After spending four days ripping traps in grass, I learned what I needed to feel.

That said, I threw a Cumara Reaction CUCX711MH several times (using 50 lb. braid) and it was night and day.  IMO that is an excellent (and perhaps perfect) grass trap setup.

The 7' M m/f Veritas would make a good trap rod.  I'm using 1 for spinnerbaits and another for deep cranks.  They're not really that moderate, closer to a MH power, and they're $99 shipped.

Take a look at the Shimano Compre 7', MH cranking rod, CPC-C70MHB. The price is in your range and the warranty can't be beat

X2...this is my rod for red eyes, rattle traps, and even big shallow cranks like a Mann's 1-.  Even stout enough for small (~1oz or less) swimbaits.  Mine is paired with a Curado 200E7 and 14lb Stren Magnaflex.
