Fish Chris Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 So I was looking at pg 18 of my new Cabelas 2011 fishing catalog, and I see this nice looking Cabela's branded reel, that just has to have been made by Daiwa... The Tournament ZX. http://www.cabelas.com/spinning-reels-cabelas-tournament-zx-spinning-reel-1.shtml Hmmmm. I was so sure my next reel would be a Pflueger..... but I always liked my Daiwa's. I actually like the finish on these better than I do the Daiwas in the same price range.... Your thoughts ? Oh, and anybody here own one of these reels yet ? Peace, Fish Quote
d3bf48 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I used one for most of 2010 and had no complaints. They were just on sale for like $50 and that's what I paid for mine last winter. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 IMO the Pflueger President is one of the best bang-for-the-buck spinning reels at that $ point. There about the same weight but the Pflueger's gear ratio is a little faster (5.2:1 vs 4.7:1). The few reviews on the Cabela reel weren't exactly glowing, but you never know. I might try one if I hadn't already had good experience with the President. Quote
Bass4Me007 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Probably one of the better reels for the $$$ you can buy. Has a very smooth drag. Does the job well. Daiwa has made this for Cabelas for several years. Very similar to Daiwa's old Regal Z. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 14, 2011 Super User Posted January 14, 2011 Looks like another Hardbodyz based reel, similar to the Capricorns I have. Same price range too, though I got mine at 1/2 off. That gear ratio is off set by spool diameter on the Daiwa ABS spools. You'd have to check the IPT, but I believe they close. I know its only like a 2" difference comparing a Shimano 2500 to a Daiwa 2500. Quote
21farms Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 i have one in the 2500-size and love it. for the money, i don't think there's a better buy. something about that reverse-tapered spool really allows for long distances on the cast. very smooth drag and the line management is better than most of the other spinning reels i've used or owned. shootermcbob Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I have the Tournament ZX in the 3000 size. Smooth drag, smooth upon the retrieve, and I bought it for 50 bucks. The guys at Cabelas recommended them to me, and compared it favorably to the Diawa exceler. I have shimano symmetres and a saros, and while I think the shimano reels are "smoother" on the retrieve, the cabelas reel does everything very well, and for some reason I am able to cast farther with the cabelas reel as well. For 50.00 bucks, I think it is an outstanding value. Quote
Fish Chris Posted January 15, 2011 Author Posted January 15, 2011 Much thanks guys... And hey Bass4me > Very similar to Daiwa's old Regal Z. No kidding ? I used to LOVE my Regal Z's ! That right there was just about all I needed to hear ! I might have to get one of these "and" a Pflueger, then beat the heck out of them throwing heavy swimbaits (oh, you guys remember I'm the whacko that uses spinning for everything, right ? ) and see which one holds up the best. Of course, I'm sure I can wear them both out, but then I can see which one outlasts the other.... Peace, Fish Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 15, 2011 Super User Posted January 15, 2011 Like Chris I fish nothing but spinning. Most of the reels mentioned will do a fine job and recommendations pretty much boils down to a popularity contest. I think I have a handle on the kind of fish that Chris catches, not too different than what I catch. Cutting right to the chase I would favor a a floog supreme, not the xt, corrosion doesn't seem to be an issue. Supremes do not have the strongest drags but if the drags are set properly it doesn't matter if a reel has say 10# of drag compared to a same sized reel with 14#, as long as the drag is smooth, the drag is set to the specs of the line. I used a supreme 35 for snook, jacks, bluefish and others up to about 30#, no problem. The reel is light, has good line capacity, never failed, never needed service and priced right. For the most part I'm an Abu Soron stx guy, but the prices are a bit higher. When needed I will be considering a supreme xt 40 to replace my Daiwa tierra 3000. Quote

There are some differences. But in fishing them, I find them very similar. I've always been amazed at Daiwa spinning drags at even the Regal Z price point. Same with this one. The Hardbodyz came after the old Z's. I think it will serve you well. Quote
The Rooster Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 How does the Cabela's Tournament ZX do for gear grinding issues?? I'd like to try one, but I'm sceptical of how it will do after a season of use. I can't stand anymore gear grind in a reel and if it means $100+ reels from now on to avoid it then I'm there. I've already started... Oh, and I have had 2 of those Pflueger Presidents, and they BOTH grinded horribly. Never were smooth from day one and only got worse as time went on. Everyone I've ever looked at in stores had the same barely noticable gear grind that mine did so I'm sure in time they would be doing the same thing. My experience with the President makes me think that what most are calling smooth is really not nearly as smooth as I'm looking for. I'm convinced no one would think the one I have now is smooth.
