The Rooster Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 I have a 6'6" medium heavy Compre rod with a Curado E7 on it. It's going to be used with the following lures....... Spinnerbait Buzzbait Jig Carolina rig Rat-L-Trap (ripping through grass) Frogs (since I have no other heavier rod for this) Swimbaits up to 1 ounce (since I have no other rod for this) Those are all the lures it would see but primarily it will be used with just the spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and jigs. I was thinking braided line for sensitivity and strength but fishing spinnerbaits I like to let them drag into things like rocks and stumps. I'm afraid braid will fray up. I know I can use a leader which I would do. Is there still a chance for fraying?? I've never used braid so I just don't know. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted January 12, 2011 Super User Posted January 12, 2011 There's always a chance for fraying with any line. I see no reason why you cannot use braid for the situations you mention. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 12, 2011 Super User Posted January 12, 2011 get fireline braid and do it right the first time. Quote
APK62 Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 If you are concern about fraying, use a fluro leader. You will have the best of both worlds. Quote
lightsout Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 You should be fine for all of the above. The only thing that I can see being a hinderance is the braid/rattlebait combo. Ive been fortunate to spend alot of time fishing private lakes with some big fish for the last 5 years or so, and almost always have a rattlebait tied on to atleast one rod. I have found that braid just wasnt a good choice for traps. If you throw these baits extstensively with braid it will cost you slightly more fish. Being that on any given cast the next fish could be HUGE on these baits, its just not a gamble I'm willing to take. The sensivity and ability to "snap" the lure outta the grass is awesome. But if you factor in that your gonna tear a larger hole in the fish with that braid (there by making it easier to throw the bait) it aint worth it. Some also say that mono/copoly/flouro help the fish take the lure better, but I'm not sold on that. Another thing to consider is when erratically ripping the lure, braid can foul the hooks (admittedly not that often but it did happen) which could potentially mean not getting that big bite. Id leave the rattlebaits for nylon/flouro/copolys. Quote
RandySBreth Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 I prefer straight braid on my Spinnerbait/buzzbait rods, but you have to remind yourself to set your drag and check it - especially with heavier action/power rods. As for jigs- try straight braid and if you fish clear water and feel the fish just aren't buying it, you can easily throw a leader on there. I think the rattlebaits are more of a drag issue again, if it gives a little instead of pulling the hooks out (or bending them) you'll know your doing it right. Quote
