FishinTN Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 OK, I bought one of these gold sticks from that ohya site on sale. Got it today, started putting a reel on it and while tightening down the cork cracked on the knob. Very disappointed with that, and worries me about happening again. Called GLoomis, and they said send it in and they handle it. Not using the wildcard deal either. Just worries me a little if it happens on down the road, and have to use the wildcard for such a trivial thing. OH, and I didn't tighten it no more than I do on my other rods either. Anyone else had this happen? my 1st big money rod experience. : Quote
steezy Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Should have bought a Steez, (just kidding). That sucks ! I feel for you and I don't blame you for being very upset but don't let that deter you from buying nice gear. I've had at least 2 issues with expensive rods and reels but luckly they were taken care of very quickly. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted December 31, 2010 Super User Posted December 31, 2010 It happens. Regardless of what you spent on a rod. Send it in and they'll replace it. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted December 31, 2010 Super User Posted December 31, 2010 I've yet to fish my NRX (802C), but I have to admit I'm disappointed with the QC factor. Mine appears to be hastily built: lots of epoxy overrun on cork; cork not 100% at 12-noon; etc. This mother better blow me away, because I am not happy with slop on a $450 rod. Quote
FishinTN Posted December 31, 2010 Author Posted December 31, 2010 I'm not a big GLoomis guy anyway, and this aint selling me. I'll probably stay with St. Croix and Dobyns for high end rods. I did take it out and throw a jig in a mud bottom pond, and I hope this thing comes alive when I hit the big water. I know it's a good rod, but so far I believe their is equal or better out there for less. Quote
steezy Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Remember guys its a mass produced rod. If you want perfection then you better go high end custom and use someone like Matt Davis at Otterods. That $500 rod will cost you $600 but it will be perfect. -steezy Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted December 31, 2010 Super User Posted December 31, 2010 I dont mean to be disrespectful but you should sent it back and get refund or replacement thats what I would do. If that rod was at a store and the salesperson said this rod broke but was fixed do you want it for the same price as this other one that has never been broken. For sure you wouldnt buy the repaired one. It would just bug me to no end to settle for a repaired rod for $450 Too when a product of this price is defective people say "well things like this happen" but have a $80 rod break the same way and you hear "well you get what you pay for." A number of times Ive bought the "best brand" of something only to be disappointed and on the other hand bought the 3rd notch down item to be pleasantly surprised by the item. Quote
Carrington Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Ive come to the conclusion that loomis rods are trash, of the few that ive cycled through, ive never been happy with any of them. This is why i went to avids and high end shimanos. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 31, 2010 Super User Posted December 31, 2010 I have never had an issue with a G. Loomis rod. However, I have broken one and had it replaced through the Xpeditor service. My experience with Loomis customer service has been impeccable. Have the rod replaced if you are not 100% satisfied. Quote

Super User Sam Posted December 31, 2010 Super User Posted December 31, 2010 I understand your frustration, especially with a high end rod. After adding Kistlers and Loomis rods to my arsenal, I have now taken the position to view the rod's stats, looking for the ones with the highest IM factor and price being the second component. If I do purchase another high end rod I would expect it to be perfect upon receipt. No excuses. Perfect. If the high end rods are not perfect than I would have doubts about its performance. So far my Kistlers, G. Loomis, Shimanos, All Stars, St. Croixs and Ugly Sticks all perform as promised. And the G. Loomis service is outstanding. One more point. I always wait for a new rod or reel to be on the market for a few months to read about their performance before considering buying it. I did break this rule and got two new Abu Premier 30 spinning reels and two new Verdict rods as they were free. Please have a follow up post regarding your service with G. Loomis and also how the rod performs. Happy New Year! Quote

Skunked in DR Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on those Premier spinning reels. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted December 31, 2010 Super User Posted December 31, 2010 lol...Gloomis rods are hardly trash. : Quote

This is why i went to avids and high end shimanos. That's a shame you've came to that conclusion. All of mine have been excellent! (GLX's and IMX's - haven't tried an NRX........yet) Quote
Super User Raul Posted December 31, 2010 Super User Posted December 31, 2010 No way I 'm going to say GLoomis rods are bad, I 'm a GLoomisoid, howver, the truth is that for that kind of money I 'd rather have a custom made rod or one of them Japanese jewels ( Megabass, Evergreen ). Some may argue about the warranty, man, I 've been fishing for more than three decades, I 've owned a bunch of rods, I 've broken 3 rods in that time, 2 out of my very own stupidity, once in more than 30 years I 've made use of the warranty so yes, it 's important to have a warranty but not THAT important. jeb2 Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 I don't know what to make of the often shoddy worksmanship of many Loomis rods. Some of mine are fine, others have epoxy overrun, gaps in the cork, show gaps when the reels are tightened, etc. The NRX's I've seen show a lot of these same lack of craftsmanship. Is this the price we pay for having rods made in the USA, that they are rushed through production? Most $50 rods at Walmart seem to be made as well! Yeah, I know they're not the same, just saying. My Dobyn's Extreme rods are all prefect so far. Not a defect in site anywhere in fit and finish, FWIW. Quote

This is why i went to avids and high end shimanos. Not wanting to start a rod war but I've fished with the most expensive shimano rod (cumulus) and IMHO the gloomis GLX still blows away the shimano cumulus. The cumulus is a very nice looking and stylish rod but the GLX eats its lunch. I cant speak on the avids and I love my Steez rods but the GLX is hard to beat. Carrington, you do realize that shimano and loomis are the same company so if your buying shimano then you are still supporting loomis. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted January 1, 2011 Super User Posted January 1, 2011 As steezy said , "it's a mass produced rod" , don't expect perfection. That's total B.S. For $500 I wouldn't expect surgical precision, but the dang rod ought to be built flawless, with top attention to detail, and top notch components.Unless you wipe your backside with money, $500 IS alot to spend on a rod, so it better be worth it. Custom made or not. Quote

But, even then, something could still wrong. You said Loomis was going to fix the problem and you didn't have to use the wild card, that's because it's a manufacturers defect. Seems to me Loomis is standing behind there product 100%. I fish nothing but Loomis and have never received a damaged or "sloppy" made rod. Sht happens, but I'm confident Loomis will make it right. FishinTN Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 Well guys, I got a new rod back today(looks like a different one anyway). Kind a thought there might be a note or something saying sorry for the trouble, but oh well. Got a new rod and was taken care of pretty quickly. Now I'm just a little gunshy of tightning the reel down. Guess I'll just ease it down just over "snug"... Quote
fathom Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 if it's made with human hands, you can expect a dud now and then...be it st. croix, dobyns, abu, kistler and all the other usual suspects. one long look at any good tackle store will tell you that. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 11, 2011 Super User Posted January 11, 2011 the fact is when you read enough over the internet fishing forums you come to see way more threads on broken loomis rods then any other.if you don't believe me start keeping track of it.i hardly ever hear about st. croix rods breaking or poor quality of finish on them. Quote
fathom Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 on the sites i visit, there seems to be an equal amount of issues from every rod/reel/tackle manufacturer out there. again...if it's made by humans, there will be duds. Quote
