Bass_Akwards Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 So I bought a new Shimano Curado. I'm moving up in reel quality and therefore I need to move up in line quality as well. I vowed to NEVER fish Mono again, especially on a baitcasting reel, so I think I'll be throwing mostly flouro. I'll throw braid too but my question is.. What flourocarbon line do you guys recommend? I've lost some personal bests fishing 10#test mono due to abrasion issues and I'm wanting that to pretty much stop. What's a smooth, long casting, tough flouro brand you guys trust? Should I start throwing 17 pound test so I don't have to worry so much about trees and logs and rocks? 20? Thanks again! Quote
SharkHat Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 I've been thinking about giving YoZuri Hybrid a try in 12lb. It seems to be very well regarded. Quote
Bass_Akwards Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 YoZuri is very nice in general. On Kents recommendation, I fish the 10# a lot and have had a bunch of success with it. For the money it's fantastic. Conversely, I've had a few breakoffs where I was sure it wasn't my fault, but who knows, maybe that was my pride talking. I'm thinking I'd like to fish a 15# or more pure flouro, as opposed to a hybrid, and increase my odds of not losing a 6+ pounder because of the trees and rocks I fish. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 5, 2011 Super User Posted January 5, 2011 BPS XPS flouro has a good rep, is relatively inexpensive, and could be a candidate for your initial foray into flouro line. If you end up liking flouro, you could experiment from there. I've used the 12lb XPS and it was good for me... : I know that you will want to spool that new reel right away so you can't wait...but XPS is an extra-good value when it's on sale.......... Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 5, 2011 Super User Posted January 5, 2011 Give Seaguar AbrazX a try. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 5, 2011 Super User Posted January 5, 2011 You swearing off mono? You must mean nylon. Fluoro is a mono. So is copoly. I'd use 50# Power Pro or 12# P-Line CXX. The CXX is going to be more resistant to abrasion than braid or fluoro or braid. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted January 5, 2011 Super User Posted January 5, 2011 Yep, I only use mono for bigger gamefish. Quote

Super User BASSclary Posted January 5, 2011 Super User Posted January 5, 2011 Seaguar AbrazX or BPS XPS in your size of choice 8-) Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted January 5, 2011 Super User Posted January 5, 2011 Another vote for CXX in 10, 12, or 15#. For all purpose I would probably go with 12. It is tough and much stronger than rated breaking point. Quote
lsbass Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 I throw 10-14lb in open water. 15-20 depending on cover and what depth im going for. Quote
Bass_Akwards Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 Wow. AbrazX Fluorocarbon 12lb 200yd $18.99 P-Line CXX Crystal Clear 300yd 12lb Test $9.49 Now I'm really confused. Is this a true case of "You get what you pay for?" Is the AbrazX really worth more than TWICE the money than cxx is selling for? I know everything is subjective and one angler is going to like some things more than others. BUT... Kent or others who have tried both, from your experience, is the AbrazX really worth more than twice the price of CXX? I'm super curious. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted January 6, 2011 Super User Posted January 6, 2011 I [ch9829] AbrazX, however I hated CXX if you read my review, you know how much I hated it. For me its worth the money. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted January 6, 2011 Super User Posted January 6, 2011 I'd give Seaguar Red Label a try...it's like 10.99 a spool and fishes very similar to XPS FC. I am also a CXX fan and would suggest that and CX. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted January 6, 2011 Super User Posted January 6, 2011 BA what line is best or worth is a subjective choice. For $10 or less you can give CXX a try. YoZuri is cheap as well. You can always try one of the higher end lines if the cheaper ones don't work for you. Just my opinion. Your mileage may vary. Quote
Bassohol Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 I went through a similar stage and have progressed on past it now. I swore off nylon monofilament line when I really got into bass fishing and read about fluorocarbon. It was clearer, it was stronger, it didn't stretch as much, it resisted water, it was more abrasion resistant, and so forth. So FC is all I used for quite a while. I tried every different line I could get my hands on and finally came to a conclusion on FC. I hated it. All of it. The memory was ridiculous, the stuff was so stiff I felt like I was trying to cast fencing wire, and in my experience it nicked up easier than nylon. So, I now use copolymers and braid exclusively. I love P-Line Floroclear and YoZuri Hybrid, and I'm currently using Sufix 832 which I am very impressed with. Quote
BobP Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 You said you wanted fluoro, not copolymer like CXX or Yozuri Hybrid. Yes, fluoro is pricier but is not affected by water absorption or UV degradation like copolymer so lasts much longer. I can usually leave it on the reel until the level begins to get low from snipping off pieces during re-tying. I like BassPro XPS, have never had any issues with it and the price is good (especially during their April spring sale). I've also had excellent service from Seguar and P-line pure fluoro. One tip is to check how many yards comes on a spool. I see no reason to spool the whole reel with fluoro when I'll never use more than the first 75 yards. So a spool of 250 yds will give me at least 3 spool-ups while a 200 yd spool will probably be only 2. It makes a big difference in your actual "fishing cost". If you're gonna use it for T-rig worms and also crankbaits, my favorite is 12 lb line. Fluoro is typically a little thinner in diameter than the same test copolymer. Quote
repper Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 My advice would be to try braid, Sufix, and learn to tie a good Alberto to connect some fluro leaders, and you will never look back. it's so much more versatile. try some 50lb Sufix Performance braid with your choice of fluro leader. And yes, the initial cost is more, but the braid will last a very long time. and you can switch out the fluro leader to different lb test rather easily once you master the alberto knot. If you insist on spooling up all fluro then go with Seaguar AbrazX 12lb Quote
